#2 Eastern Washington Eagles (2-0, 0-0 BSC) at University of Toledo Rockets (0-2, 0-0 MAC)

Series: Never met.

After a pair of tussles with the Southeastern Conference, the Big Sky Conference is going to look downright inviting to the Toledo Rockets of the Mid-American Conference.

Toledo is 0-2 after suffering a 24-6 loss to Florida to open the season and then falling 38-23 to Missouri on Sept. 7. A year ago, UT advanced to its third-straight bowl game, falling to Utah State 41-15 in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise, Idaho. The Rockets finished 9-4 overall and 6-2 in the Western Division of the MAC.

“It’s a test – it’s a true test,” said Eastern head coach Beau Baldwin. “They are a very quality opponent, and a team that wins eight or nine games every year at the FBS level. When you watch video of them, they can play with any team in the country and they showed that in the first two weeks against Florida and Missouri.

“We are going to have to really be on point on both sides of the ball,” he continued. “Our margin for error is going to be razor thin – especially on the road. There are certain things we did last week that we won’t get away with against Toledo. We know that, and we have to attack it all week in practice.”

Eastern enters 2-0, having upset 25th-ranked Oregon State from the Pac-12 Conference 49-46 on Aug. 31 and then scoring 29 first-quarter points in a 43-14 romp over NCAA Division II Western Oregon on Sept. 7.

Eastern is 2-0 for only the second time since 2001, and the first in Beau Baldwin’s 10 seasons as an Eastern head coach or assistant coach. In fact, the last time EWU was 3-0 came in 2007 when Baldwin was head coach at Central Washington.

“It has been awhile since we have been 2-0 because we always have had such a tough nonconference schedule to start the season,” he said. “The neat thing about the Western Oregon game is that there are a lot of things that we can coach and clean up. At the end of the day, I love finding stuff to clean up especially when the guys find a way to win, and win fairly convincingly. It feels pretty good to be 2-0.”

Toledo had some decent flashes at Mizzou, but gave up big plays and turnovers too often. If this was in Cheney, I'd actually expect EWU to be the favorite. Hopefully EWU can keep it close and grab another FBS scalp! Go Eagles (for this game at least)!

I don't expect us to win this one, but wouldn't be that surprised if we did, either. It'll come down to run defense and the ability to get our offense on the field as much as possible. I think we can score on these guys just fine.

From the Toledo Blade article:

“Honestly, they’re a Division I team. They should be in FBS,” UT running back David Fluellen said.

“They have a chip on their shoulder to show everyone they should be D-I,” Rockets defensive end Jayrone Elliott said.

Well, your mind is pretty silly.

Probably, but I was the person that walked into Bill Synder Family stadium stating NDSU was going to win the entire time I was there, so there's that!

Or we can go the logical way and realize that the MAC isn't anything special other than their name of being FBS. NDSU crushed the MAC champion a few years back, I'm fairly confident EWU can score enough against them to win. If they'll stop them from scoring is the question.

How is your running back situation this year? Against OSU, Adams kept it on 80% of the read option plays. Do you have the backfield to make that give against Toledo? If so, EWU wins comfortably.

Adams is EWU's leading rusher at this point, but they've done RB by committee it seems this year. So there aren't any real strong individual standouts in that regard, but the total rushing for the year so far is 16th in the FCS. Personally, I've really liked seeing some of the rushing efforts from a few of the new Eagles particularly. Freshman Jalen Moore and Jabari Wilson both looked solid on several of their runs. There are several other RB's that have played, and done well as well. Aside from Adam's yards, the RB's have put up over 300 yards in the two games so far this year. I see the coaching staff very committed to the run, and predict a more balanced attack for the year.

All that being said, I still see this game as a one in five chance for the Eagles to win. I think they will play well, and keep it close. But with the way the Toledo players and coaches are talking about this game, they won't be taking it lightly. And they've had a couple of games to work out the jitters. They're gonna want this win bad, and will fight hard for it. They have more film to go from then the Beav's did. I will personally be as impressed if EWU can pull this one off as against Oregon State.

He did...that said, there were also a couple nice runs right up the middle out of the read option as well. As far as RB's, we've had four different guys run the ball through two games (Brown, Wilson, Moore, Forte). We also have who was thought to be our starter this season (Bronson) sitting out with injury who hasn't played yet and Forte (probably #2) didn't play versus OSU. Right now I don't see the RB by committee thing changing and we'll continue to see a lot of different guys getting carries as there's no real home runner hitters. I think Wilson could be that guy in the future, but he's just a Freshman.

lack of defense hurts EWU.

Gave up 530 yards of offense, with 325 of that on the ground. That's going to be a huge issue for them as the season goes on.

Also only 51 rushing yards...

Not a lot of balance

EWU will look very strong through BSC play as it looks very weak defensively....but long run I don't see them as a legit title contender until/unless those issues are fixed.

Don't get me wrong...you'll rip through the Big Sky...Montana will be your only challenge.

Idaho State -Nothing needs to be said
Montana State - looks pedestrian on offense without DM. Defense may keep them in things though. As bad as the rest of the BSC looks they're still probably a 3rd place team.
Portland State - potential but they gave up 350 yards of offense to the D2 they played today, 616 yards to Cal, and 438 yards to Eastern Oregon
SUU - beat up on a D2 and a hapless South Alabama. Gave up just under 500 yards today and gained 213
NAU - Bowman runs like crazy, but only averaging about 200 yards of offense per game
CP - tough to tell after playing 2 FBS teams, but giving up about 480 yards per game of offense the last 2 weeks...
UND - possibly worst defense in the history of ever
UNC - lost to a D2, about to get **** stomped by UNI this week...giving up about 420 yards of offense per week. Might be luck to win another game this year
WSU- there's got to be an upside to getting outscored 140-13 in the last 2 weeks, and 180-63 on the season, right? Well, they get to play BSC defenses. They are givng up 600 yards of offense per game
SSU - Needed OT, and 63 points to beat a D2/NAIA school while giving up 600 yards of offense..averaging giving up about 520-540 yards on the season. On the plus side, they finally scored this season...only took 3 games. That should change quickly facing these BSC defenses.
UC-D - actually has one of the best defenses in the conference thus far giving up a meager 340 yards per game

EWU will beat the **** out of the Big Sky....I'm not so sure about teams they will hit come playoffs

EWU will beat the **** out of the Big Sky....I'm not so sure about teams they will hit come playoffs

looks about right, should add our worst team that didn't win a game last year beat UC-D this year

I don't think there are many teams in the FCS that could perform at the level of either Oregon State or Toledo. EWU won one of those games, and was competitive in the other, being down by two points into the 4th quarter. I don't think many FCS defenses would have been able to stop the Toledo rushing attack. Against the FCS, I personally don't see the Eagle defense as world beaters, but I think they will play well enough to allow the offense to win the game. Additionally, I think the EWU style of play, being a faster, more quick strike style than some others can inflate the defensive stats because our D ends up on the field more. The slower, methodical, clock control styles tend to produce less offensive yards, and have better defensive stats. I think it's more style than that the Eagle or BSC defenses suck.

Also, as much as I would love to believe EWU will walk through the BSC, many of the league games always seem to be tough. EWU has a target, and all of those teams would love to take us down. MSU and Portland State will be tough games no matter the circumstances, almost having a rivalry flavor, and I believe UM is legit, and will prove to be a top 5 team over the season. Who knows who wins that one. But I think EWU loses two BSC games this year, and still makes it to the playoffs.

Sure wish we had Kaufman today!

This. Exactly this. Our defense isn't as bad as it has looked against OSU and Toledo, both of those teams had huge talent on offense. Our defense will be just fine if/when we make the playoffs this year, which I think we will.
