BROOKINGS — The South Dakota State football team on Wednesday afternoon put on pads – half of them, anyway – for the first time, taking another step in the month-long dress rehearsal that is fall camp.

This particular prep period figures to be unique in the sense that the Jackrabbits are settled – and not.

That is, things arguably are ahead of schedule from a player personnel standpoint. SDSU returns 15 starters and the few vacancies are being filled by the expected successors – that was the case on the third day. . . . (read more)

I have a few co-workers who have said it, I wasn't even talking about Darryl, oddly enough.

Yeah the fans you work with have unreasonable expectations and don't know what they are talking about, not worth the argument. I think we will have an improved defense but after last year I need to see this in a live game before I make any bold predictions. I am looking forward to this game because after the dust settles we will have a good idea of how good / bad this team is.

BROOKINGS — The South Dakota State football team is implementing some defensive tweaks this fall in an attempt to improve on what the Jackrabbits allowed last year – 16.4 points and 305.3 yards per game.

That ranked fifth and eighth, respectively, in the FCS, vital in earning nine victories and reaching the second round of the playoffs for the first time in school history.

Still, the staff – especially defensive coordinator Clint Brown – felt that the Jacks gave up too many big plays against spread offenses and spread formations, both of which continue to gain popularity in college football. . . . (read more)

The Fertile-Beltrami kid is from my hometown up here in MN. Good kid from a good family. If he ends up a Jack, he will most likely redshirt his 1st year. 6-4 and 250. Has the frame to be 300, easy.

Interesting the Jacks are coming all the way up here looking for kids. Right in the Bison's backyard. A few years ago a Thief River Falls kid went to UNI then transferred to Minn-Duluth.

The latest developments from South Dakota State fall camp, which is closing in on the end of Week 2:

The Jacks will scrimmage - with officials on hand - Saturday morning in the first of two workouts.

A pretty good chunk of SDSU players (seniors, juniors and sophomores) are on the radar of at least one NFL scouting site – NFLDraftScout.com – heading into the season. They are, listed in order based on ranking within position and class:

BROOKINGS — Austin Sumner’s goal isn’t to regain the form of a record-breaking freshman season, it’s to be better – different, but better.

There are two parts to that thought: His right thumb fits differently on the football following surgery in January after dislocating it last August, yet his mind is more in tune with the South Dakota State offense. It’s easy to forget that this season was supposed to be his first as the starting quarterback.

Instead, it’ll be his third – and he’s hardly been biding time to become an upperclassman.

Sumner owns conference and national honors, last fall quarterbacked the Jackrabbits further into the playoffs than anybody ever has and is on pace to break the program record for career passing yards midway through this season, his junior campaign. . . . (read more)

After reading a out Sumner's thumb injury last year it's kind of amazing he was still able to produce and still run the offense as well as he did. The interceptions were a sore spot early in the season but after the UNI game I thought that Austin played well.

I'm real excited to see the offense get things going this year. Should be fun to watch.

The latest news and notes from South Dakota State football:

The Jackrabbits will hold their second and final scrimmage of fall camp Saturday night. However, it’s pretty likely a fair number of starters won’t play in order to stay healthy and to get extra reps for developing guys. That’s one reason the first scrimmage was described as sloppy by coach John Stiegelmeier.

On Wednesday, SDSU began implementing with half the team ideas for the season opener against Butler. Today, the scout team will make its debut and depth charts will become more relevant.
The true freshman making the most serious push to play: linebacker Jesse Bobbitt. It’s about a 95-percent certainty.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder from Palatine, Ill., was a four-time all-conference pick in high school and a first-team all-state player as a senior. Remind you of anybody else on the roster? T.J. Lally was also a first-team all-state linebacker in Illinois and gained consideration to play as a true frosh. But the staff held off, and as a redshirt freshman Lally made 107 tackles and was up for the Jerry Rice Award. . . . (read more)

SDSU's slate has six games in Brookings

BROOKINGS — There’s no such thing as an easy schedule in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, graded as the best in the FCS the last two seasons. However, the slate that awaits South Dakota State is friendlier than most the squad has faced in recent years from a logistical perspective.

It includes: Six home games plus two away dates within the Dakotas; no road trips longer than two games and only two flights; and a nearly month-long stay in Brookings.

While that might be commonplace for elite FBS programs, it’s a rare luxury deal for SDSU, an organizational high point to start the school’s 10th campaign at the NCAA Division I level. Consider that the Jacks have had as few as four home games in a season, opened with bye weeks multiple times – meaning no in-season breaks – and endured three recent road trips of three games or more. This breakthrough docket is the result of years of scheduling coming together in a conflux of planning and luck.

“It matters for sure,” SDSU senior defensive tackle Chase Douglas said. “When guys need treatments for bumps and bruises and whatnot, we just have flat out more time to get that done. That makes us healthier when we play. We do notice it a lot.” . . . (read more)

Camp Chronicles: Aug. 26

The South Dakota State football team wrapped up fall camp Saturday night with walkthrough/practice/scrimmage under the lights at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. Now, the Jackrabbits will begin to prep for this week’s season opener against Butler.

The latest news and notes:

The only long-term injury heading into the season is to veteran long snapper Matt Peitz. He could be done for good, although he hopes to rest and rehab enough to be able to return, according to coach John Stiegelmeier. That means true freshman Thayer Threnhaile will get the call.
There are also questions about redshirt freshman running back Isaac Rodgriquez. He wore a walking cast on his left foot Saturday. Reserves linebacker Patrick Schuster and Nick Carr also did not play.

The official depth chart will come out later this week, but the Saturday workout gave a glimpse at where things stand. Of note are a couple of moves on the offensive line: Senior Taylor Suess is penciled in as the starting center - juniors Nick Purcell and Andrew Mueller also got reps there during camp - and redshirt freshman Mike Shoff has surpassed senior Josh Kage at a guard spot. . . .
