Dover, DE (Sports Network) - Delaware State University head football coach Al Lavan announced on Wednesday that senior quarterback and projected starter Bryan Botts has left the school and will not return to the team for the 2005 campaign.

"Bryan recently informed me that he will not return to the university this fall due to personal reasons," Lavan said. "He said he wanted to return home to California to be with his family and girlfriend."

Botts, who participated in the Hornets' spring 2005 football camp, appeared in nine games last season -- starting seven -- and completed 143-of-249 passes for 1,826 yards. He also threw 12 touchdown passes with nine interceptions, as he guided the team to a 4-3 mark in his starts.

In Delaware State's 34-30 loss to Morgan State last October 23, Botts set school records with 37 completions and 430 passing yards.

"Obviously it's tough to lose your starting quarterback prior to the season, but we will make adjustments and move forward," said Lavan.

How are their other quarterbacks? The JMU Dukes host the Delaware State Hornets in Bridgeforth Stadium on September 17, 2005 at 6:00 PM.

From today's local paper...

DSU has three quarterbacks on its roster. Vashon Winton (6-foot-2, 195 pounds, from Chicago) and Phil Anderson (6-0, 185, Plainfield, N.J.) sat out last year as freshman redshirts and were No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, on the depth chart this spring.

Kurt Eldon (6-2, 200, Rockford, Minn.), a junior transfer from Minnesota State Technical and Community College, signed with the Hornets this spring and is enrolled in summer classes at DSU.
