When Andrew Audelin took the first handoff of Saturday’s scrimmage 25 yards down the right sideline with the Bearkat offense backed up on its own goal line, a sense of excitement filled the air at Bowers Stadium.

But other than that, it took a while for the offense to heat up with the defense owning the turf for most of SHSU’s first full-contact scrimmage. Defensively, the Bearkats flew to the ball, hit hard and caused some turnovers, clearly setting the tone early.

“I thought the defensive guys showed up with a lot of energy and ready to play, more so than the offensive guys,” Bearkats coach Todd Whitten said. “We made a few mistakes, but we played hard. We tackled decently, and the biggest thing I thought was that we played hard.”
