Did not attend the scrimmage, but it seems the ole ball coach likes his defense. Kats are going to be interesting on offense where the running back depth lacks and there is an obvious divide amongst the Kat faithful on who the starting QB should be, something that could change week to week unless a guy stands out during the season with consistent play...

From Bearkat Athletics...

Sam Houston head coach Todd Whitten knew defense was going to be a strength of his 2006 football team and the first full scrimmage of the Bearkats' 2006 preseason camp showed just that.

"The defense came into the scrimmage with a lot of energy and were ready to play," Whitten said. "They had a good day. Both units played hard and that's what you want to see in a scrimmage."

Wade Pate, the Bearkats' number one quarterback, completed eight of 15 passes for 107 yards including touchdown throws of 18 and 25 yards. Andrew Audelin led the rushing attack with 45 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. D. D. Terry, converted this fall from a linebacker to running back, also had good moments carrying the ball.

"We've had 10 practices now and today was our first time to play with officials. We had way too many penalities. That's to be expected at this stage, but its definitely something we have to work on," Whitten said. "Twice, the defense came up with big turnovers near the goal line that could have been big in a real game and had to give the ball back because of a penalty.

"On the whole, however, we were pleased with the effort," Whitten said. "We've had 10 good practices and we're making progress."
