The Kats won't even do the typical two-a-days because they don't start til September 9th. Kats are going to get down to business tommorrow with physicals and team meetings, before hitting the turf for real on Thursday.

Lots of things to be determined during preseason workouts. Wade Pate is the starting QB going in, but could that change? Questions abound at RB in terms of what kind of depth the Kats will see. Any true freshman going to see PT this year similar to some guys who stuck out last year? We'll just have to wait and see!

Best of luck to the Kats this year!

Head Coach Todd Whitten and his staff will welcome 90 players for the beginning of Sam Houston State's preseason football camp when athletes report Wednesday, August 9.

The athletes report for physicals from 2:30 to 4 p.m. and will hold their first team meeting Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Thursday morning newcomers will go through a fitness test. The team's first practice will be at 3:30 p.m.on the turf at Bowers Stadium.

The Bearkats return 48 lettermen from last year's squad including 16 starters, eight on both offense and defense. Sam Houston State will field a much more experienced squad this fall with 16 senior lettermen and 18 junior lettermen returning. Last year's 3-7 Bearkat team featured only 11 seniors.

“With so few seniors on last year’s team and more than half of the players in two deep freshmen and sophomores, we were awfully young last year, ” Whitten said. “It was a disappointing season with lots of ups and downs. But we finished the year with some good performances and look for the momentum from a good spring to carry over into preseason camp. The great thing about freshmen and sophomores is they become juniors and seniors. We have an outstanding group of returning players with a strong senior class.”

With Sam Houston State not starting the season until the second weekend of the season, hosting Arkansas-Monticello on Sept. 9, the Bearkats will not be going through the two practices a day schedule once common in practice football.

no two-a-days??? R U SERIOUS?!

Why do it if it isn't necessary? We have a hole extra week to prepare.

no two-a-days??? R U SERIOUS?!

We'll get as many practices as the rest...without tiring out our players who will have some rough stretches early in the season...

Kats got bitten by injury-bug last year. I don't mind no two-a-days! :)

oh. sorry, didn't realize you guys started a week after everyone else.

eleven straight weeks. i'd rather have a week in the middle to heal. IMO, that schedule could do more harm than good (i.e. LESS time to heal injuries...) but meh, good luck with that. :-)

Questions remain for the Kats as is apparent by this article, namely at RB:

“Andrew is going to be our main guy, but after that we aren’t sure,” Whitten said. “Desmond Mays transferred, so we are lacking in the running back department. We are going to try out (linebacker) D.D. Terry at running back early on and Chris Poullard will get a shot, and we still might get a transfer.”

Surprised they are trying out DD Terry at RB. Terry is a gifted athlete who is a member of our back-to-back outdoor conference championship squad in track and field where he excels in the sprints.

Ready for year two

SHSU players report today for upcoming football season
Cody Stark
Assistant Sports Editor

Last season, Todd Whitten had a chance to get his feet wet in the Southland Conference when he took over as the Sam Houston State head football coach after Ron Randleman retired.

The Bearkats never found a rhythm and limped to a 3-7 record en route to a sixth-place finish in the SLC. But heading into year two, Whitten and his staff are more familiar with the conference and their team.

Today, 90 players will make their way to Bowers Stadium for the start of the 2006 season with a chance to make a run at a league championship.

“I think that we have a better knowledge of our personnel and what they are capable of,” Whitten said Tuesday. “Everything is so much easier heading into this fall. We were a young team last year, and we weren’t all on the same page. But now we have had two springs and a fall and everything is going smoothly.”

The SHSU preview by the Daily Sentinel's (the Nacodogdoches fishwrap -- home of SFA) very own Kevin Gore. He pens on the Kats' inconsistency from year to year since 2001. Of course, no mention of SHSU's dominance of SFA as of late. Hope Gore reflects on that down the road when the Jacks host the Kats...

Sam Houston has shown to be either way up or way down

Recent history has shown that the Sam Houston Bearkats are either way up or way down.

They followed a 10-3 campaign in 2001 with 4-7 and 2-9 marks the next two years.

They were 11-3 in 2004 before going 3-7 last season.

Because the Bearkats are consistent at being inconsistent, it's difficult to get a handle on what they will do from one season to the next.

Bearkats hit the field, hoping to build off 2005

SHSU begins fall practice focused on improvement

Sam Houston State officially opened the fall season Thursday afternoon at Bowers Stadium, and everybody was all smiles except about one thing — the heat.

The Bearkats practiced for the first time Thursday and looked crisp for a squad that hadn’t hit the field since the spring game back in April. The running backs were hitting the holes, the quarterbacks and receivers were completing passes and the defense was swarming to the ball during drills.

The only thing that seemed to slow things down was the blistering temperatures rising from the turf.

“(The first day) was good,” SHSU head coach Todd Whitten said. “We have a group that looks to be in shape for the most part. I think everybody is excited to get to work. After last season, everybody still has a bad taste in their mouths, and we want to get things turned around.”

Allen being out is a big diasppointment. I was looking for him to rebound this year and step up for the Kats.
