Old Dominion at #3? Not sure how they can be ranked ahead of Youngstown State and The Citadel.

They haven't exactly challenged themselves with their non-conference schedule: Duquesne, Hampton, Campbell.

It's close, the poll is still ugly, but it's better than TSN & the coaches.

Too low: Wofford, McNeese, UNH, UCA & Ind St

Too High: ODU, GSU, Montana, Lehigh, App

Easy... and I completely agree with the ranking.

Montana and App was a very close game. Citadel completely thumped ASU.

Good teams don't get completely blown out of their own building like ASU did. I don't care that Citadel beat GSU the week before. That kind of drubbing that ASU took AT HOME on Saturday would have been unacceptable if the opponent was Oklahoma. It honestly looked like a college team playing a high school team.

So if App is a bad team and they beat Montana, clearly Montana should be a worse team and not ranked higher than them.

Fair enough so that gets Montana 1500 poll points to ASU 999? No matter where you rank them they should be side by side

I had Montana ahead of App - to be honest I dropped App from the top 25 altogether - they just got run off the field - literally. That's loss #2 - they should be more worried about the postseason right now versus where they're at in a poll.....

Citadel with 3 1st place votes. Looking at their resume, they probably do have the most quality FCS wins so far. I expect teams like Wofford and NDSU to be better than Citty by season's end, but right now they haven't put together the kind of body of work the Charleston Dogs have.

It's early and with short data people may also be looking at 2-1 as opposed to 1-2 and that the one win was close.

App is way better than they showed last weekend and that will prove itself out in a few more weeks. When you drop one in that fashion there is gonna be a price paid in the polls and taking just the one head to head isn't necessarily a better measuring stick.

Can everyone just agree to rank ODU a bit lower in the top 10? High rankings early in the season seem to make me nervous. If they're 7-1 or 8-0 on 28 October, I'm all for a top 5 ranking but putting up ridiculous numbers against lesser opponents when other teams are playing more competitive teams makes it a bit premature.

I gotta agree with this. I think you have to take the whole season into consideration and there are bound to be upsets. Can't always use head-to-heads to rank teams IMO. If a 5-7 team beat a 10-2 team I'm gonna have that 10-2 team ahead in the polls. I think Montana over App is justified because of the drubbing App took at home to The Citadel. If the App-UM game was at Wa-Griz, I dare say Montana probably would have come out on top.

Why not?

It's too early to tell if App and Georgia Southern are having down years or not. Both teams are regarded as powerhouses every year, but what if this is a year when they aren't? The Citadel could have just beaten 2 mediocre teams.

In a week or two, we'll see. But now, it's too early in my opinion.

I don't think Samford and NAU are under the radar at all.

I consistently have them in that 22-30 pool to round out my poll however I frankly think neither has done enough to get into the Top 25.

I think B-C is not represented on the same number of ballots as other teams that fell to an FBS opponent (and others have fallen similarly); so a slight drop by a small number of voters won't overtake slight gains by teams appearing on more ballots. (I don't have B-C in my top 25, but they stayed unmoved in my 26-35, fwiw).

Oh my.

I have 'em in my 26-35 range - FBS loss (to a bad NMSU team); FBS win (to what can only be an even worse Colorado team); and a conference home FCS win vs. a perennial BSC bottom-dweller (though I do expect some noise from UNC this year). They should be looked at, but I'll agree #15 seems pretty high (especially without NAU being included, which has a very similar record: FBS loss (blowout to Arizona State); FBS win (UNLV); blowout win vs. a lower division team).

Best of luck...we have a matchup with an undefeated league mate in ODU on the road! A win Saturday will most certainly boost us in the polls, and give us a great start to the CAA portion of our schedule!

I'm looking forward to seeing a great game, although tailgating at 8-9 AM may take a few drinks.

Why is a win over the #9 team in your poll and an annihilation on the road against the #12 team in your poll and having zero losses only worthy of being ranked #22?

1. NDSU Bison
2. SHSU Bearkats
3. ODU Monarchs
4. YSU Penguins
5. MSU Bobcats
6. Wofford Terriers
7. JMU Dukes
8. UNI Panthers
9. The Citadel Bulldogs
10. EWU Eagles
11. GSU Eagles
12. UM Grizzlies
13. Cal Poly Mustangs - maybe a little higher than most, but I think they finish in the top 3 of the BSC, one of the stronger conferences, so seemed appropriate
14. ASU Mountaineers - guess I should have pounded them harder in my poll after their shellacking
15. SBU Seawolves
16. McNeese State Cowboys - undefeated with FBS win, pound BBQ on the road, yet fall 1 spot in the AGS poll xconfusedx
17. ISU Redbirds
18. Lehigh Mountain Hawks - wasn't impressed by a 3 point win over Princeton at home
19. Delaware Fighting Blue Hens
20. UNH Wildcats
21. Towson Tigers - should have beaten W&M at home more convincingly IMO
22. Maine Black Bears
23. ISU Sycamores
24. UCA Bears
25. Albany Great Danes

I had App at 5 after the win last week but when they got their doors blown off by The Citadel, I felt it necessary to drop them accordingly. As for having the aforementioned Bulldogs that low, They are good, I will agree. That said, I didnt see that win over App as reason to launch them into the upper stratosphere and they suddenly become a top 5-10 team.

BullDog85

It's too early to tell if App and Georgia Southern are having down years or not. Both teams are regarded as powerhouses every year, but what if this is a year when they aren't? The Citadel could have just beaten 2 mediocre teams.

In a week or two, we'll see. But now, it's too early in my opinion.App is questionable. GSU is not. GSU will probably right the ship and run the table except against Wofford. I see El Cid, GSU and Wofford in the top tier in the SoCon this year. They just had ball control issues in Charleston likely due to young inexperienced ball handlers. Their ball handlers are big and fast and can and will plow you under. Russell is a beast on their D-line. You will not run up the middle on this guy. I'm glad we found a way to beat them.

Its wild seeing everyone go wild over a week 3 poll.....Who cares if your team was ranked 14 or 22? Play the games, qualify for the playoffs, justification is shown on the field. Personally, UNH could be ranked outside the top 25 right now and I could care less, I think that would be a bad poll, but why whould I cry over a poll made by fans? Everyone relax, if your team is as good as you think it is, then they will win their games, and you can talk later, when there is something to boast about.

Having the discussion afterwards is half of the reason for the poll. It is an additional way for everyone to ply their input and it also allows all of us a better perspective on FCS at a national level. If people are willing to throw their individual poll results out then they know they are going to create responses...that is why they expose their polling decisions.

Exactly.

The discussion helps fans across the board learn more about the teams they are voting/not voting for, and hopefully lets voters think a little more about their picks.

Thats perfectly fine. Polling is an important part of the season and is a good assessment for everyone to analyze. But there are a lot of posters getting a bit drematic over a few postions in an early season poll. Its mostly a matter of opinion at this point, so no need to overreact. Im not thinking of any poster in mind either, just a general thought after reading this thread.

It's close, the poll is still ugly, but it's better than TSN & the coaches.

Too low: Wofford, McNeese, UNH, UCA & Ind St

Too High: ODU, GSU, Montana, Lehigh, App

I'm curious as to why you think GSU it too high? Because we lost to The Citadel by 2 on the road?
And I agree with D-back, why is UNH too low while you also don't think NAU is too low as well?

My ballot, and in retrospect, I probably should have had NAU in over UNH.

Sure...I look for teams to impress me. UCA has had 2 comfortable wins - one against a half-decent Murray St team. Their only loss is at a SEC team - Ole Miss & the game was pretty much even for about 3 quarters. There are a bunch of teams below them that just haven't done much THIS season to deserve to be ranked higher than them IMHO.

By the way, in the month of September I don't look at my previous weeks polls - I just go thru my Phil Steele book, write down all the teams I consider rankable - try to rate them (top 5, 6-10, ...21-25, etc) and then put them in order. Probably takes 30-40 minutes to come up with it.

I took Appy's win over Montana over GSU's win over Jacksonville and playing Citadel closer. I should have had GSU in there somewhere, the bottom 5 is hard to figure out right now.

Regarding Sac State, their schedule sets up rather favorably. No Montana; with MSU, Weber and Cal Poly at home. Only tough road games I forsee are EWU and SUU and with a bye before playing @ UC-Davis. That #15 seems like a pretty good ranking to me. NAU is just outside my Top 25 as well.

Not about being butthurt. It's about someone making a dumb poll prediction. #1-#6....sure, whatever. That's up for debate. But #14?? Give me a break. Since when does playing a Top 30 FBS team tight until the last 5 minutes knock you in the polls? And, by the way, Baylor would score 100 on 10 of the teams you have ranked above Sam. Last year we got hammered by a few AGS'ers for NOT playing anyone & the title game is decided by 2 plays against a VERY good NDSU team. Then we drop in the polls for playing a very good Baylor team for 55 minutes?? Which is it?

Hey, good thing the polls don't matter. Carry on :D

Murray State: lost to FSU 69-3; lost to Central Ark 42-20; beat a bad MSU team 28-23
Ole Miss: Beat Central Ark 49-27; Beat a Bad UTEP team 28-10; lost to Texas 66-31.

So Central Ark owns ONE WIN against a very low middle to lower end Murray State team...and that's how they get to #13?

I can see an argument for Top 25...heck I batted with that. But TOP 13- Not a chance in hell. There are definitely a half dozen if not more teams with better on-field performances.

Your opinion but I find it difficult to grasp w/ on-field results.

Mine is different. If they look bad next week yet still win they will fall. You're acting like I have any given team locked into a spot as long as they win games when my track record proves otherwise. xdontknowx

When you make comments like, "future schedules...", I question your understanding of what a poll means.

That comment alone was a WTF moment for me.

I was referring to Sac State' season itself and their playoff chances, not directly to their position in the poll.

EDIT: to clarify further, whether or not the rest of the season plays out to justify a given ranking is irrelevant. RIGHT NOW. Who they have played and whom they have beaten ranks up there with the best of them. Everyone gives YSU and Ill. State credit for beating down Pitt and Eastern Michigan, yet you want to take away from the fact that they beat Colorado, "because they're no good"? You can't make that argument and then ignore it in regards to other teams.

App is questionable.

Are you talking Russell from GSU? If so we ran up the middle and every other direction on Russell and company last winter......so it can be done.

If all you can tell me on my poll is that UCA should be in the 18-23 range versus 13 then I'll consider it analytically relevant.

Thanks! There's so much turbulence this early in the season and too small of a sample size to gauge many of the teams, but I did my best. SHSU was tough for me to keep at 2, but their first half performance against Baylor was enough to stay in that slot.

20-25 were a struggle. Despite a somewhat close game against a sloppy UPenn, Lafayette's win at W&M against a team who has lost by just 7 total points to Maryland, Laf, and Towson gave me enough of a reason to put them in there.

Three weeks in and this is more work than I thought!

Not trying to get in on this debate but I look at my bears like this:
Last year playoffs.
This year hung with Ole Miss and the results were just like Sam Houstons in their last game.
Zero problem with Murray State and Bacone.

But I still have ZERO idea of how this team can play!

Playing Sam Houston might not be much of a gauge since Sam is ranked so high. Better gauge will be against SFA and McNeese.

Top 25 team as far as offense goes. Defense is lacking greatly. Hence the reason IF they get into the playoffs they won't go further than first round IMO. But I just don't see us getting by Sam OR McNeese. SFA is to be determined. Getting into the playoffs will be a feat. Even if Sam doesn't win the conference and both UCA and Sam share equal records, SAm will get the nod.

Having the discussion afterwards is half of the reason for the poll. It is an additional way for everyone to ply their input and it also allows all of us a better perspective on FCS at a national level. If people are willing to throw their individual poll results out then they know they are going to create responses...that is why they expose their polling decisions.

Bingo brother. FWIW, getting too upset over any poll isn't my way but saying this is a fan poll as if it has less value than the other ones doesn't make too much sense to me either. There is not a poll out there that more closely reflects where the teams actually end up than this one does year in and year out.

I think that's part of the reason fans fight it out so hard on these threads.

It seems to me you think beating a trash fbs team is more impressive than giving a qaulity fbs team a game, which is logic I dont agree with.

Yes, beating a "trash" FBS is a win, and counts as one of 7 D-I wins that is needed. Giving a BCS, or a ranked FBS team a "good game" is still a loss, and doesn't get the team into the final "pool" to be selected. If all the D-I wins come against teams with no/ limited (less that 63), or have no history of play-off success, then likely to not get ranked as high. Lehigh is a current "anomolie" because their wins aren't against top D-I teams. But they have a very similar team to one that had a play-off win last year, and challenged NDSU in Fargo, which is always a tough game to get the W.

My guess is most of them realize ODU was very good last year. They had them high in the preseason, and they have handled business exactly like they should with teams ahead of them losing. If people move teams based on their preseason there has been no reason to move ODU down.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't see the east coast picture as clearly as some out there. It's a learning process and every week I learn something new to help shape the poll. This early on, there are always going to be angles of "Team X performed like this against Team Y so they should be ahead of Team Z," it's impossible to have all those angles covered. Furthermore, yes, I will admit that some teams don't get the recognition that they might deserve in this poll, but if they are worthy of it, the evidence will be there and I will have them closer to where "they should be" in upcoming weeks.

I would love to have even more time to follow all the different FCS games, but there are only so many hours on a Saturday and so many hours to sort through the plethora of information available on Sunday. The tricky part for me is trying to stay away from the subjective pieces and look at things objectively.

Anyways, at the end of the day can't everyone agree to crack a cold one, take a deep breath, waste countless hours at work reading up on FCS, and try to "do better" on their polls next week? :D

why should ODU be any higher?

if it make you feel better, there is really no difference between 15-22 here.

More to the point of this thread, why is ODU getting any top-10 consideration at all?

Because they finished last year as a top 10 team, return most of those starters (15), and have Taylor Heinicke for the entire year (he's now played 12 games in his career--36 TDs, 5 INT). Their claim on the top 10 is no weaker than any team at this point of the season.

Your poll is the one that has ODU ranked vastly different than others. Tell us why. Also explain why you'd have Stony Brook that high?

How do you know any team is decent? App st is 1-2, are they decent? Mcneese was a 3 point underdog. With 5 minutes left in the 4th q mcneese was up 35-7, was ahead in total yards 550-130. Man, I'm seeing a ton of polls without UNH. Do people really think losing to now 3-0 Minnesota was so bad to drop them from the rankings all-together? They're dropping spots despite beating CCSU by 33 and beating Holy Cross by 21? They have a +54 point differential against FCS competition.

I definitely agree with putting teams like NAU, Poly and Sac. State ahead due to FBS wins...but Stony Brook, Lehigh, and a few others I'm not sure I understand.

Midwest bias... Got you guys at 19 and Lehigh at 22 fwiw. I have believed in NAU before and am hesitant to put them in until I see more. Poly (15) and Sac St (25) both made it though

Completely new poll this week. After 3 weeks I tried to base it more on performance than expectations, but there were some teams that still had a little bit of "feeling" to them. Because I create a new poll each week, I don't worry about it too much. Teams will end up where they belong as the games play out. Might be high on: McNeese, UNH, Cal Poly, JMU, Stony Brook. Might be too low on: SHSU and Montana State.

Because SBU was better than ODU last year, brings back similar numbers, and had some pretty awesome transfers.

You both lost in the round of 16, but sbu lost to the better team and played better doing it. Additionally, they beat a better team in the playoffs than you did.

Since then, your team has dined on some delicious puff-pastries. What exactly am I supposed to be rating you on? The games you haven't played or the team you didn't beat?

Not bad, though I question the motive of giving Towson the #6 ranking for a bad loss to an underwhelming Kent State team and a 3 pt victory at home over winless W&M. Lafayette also beat W&M by 3 on the road yet didn't even make your top 25. xconfusedx

You really think UNH is a top ten team? I think thats a bit much right now, maybe if UNH beats ODU this weekend. I think UNH and Maine should be ranked side by side at this point, both got trounced vs FBS opponents but trounced their FCS opponents

How do you know any team is decent? App st is 1-2, are they decent? Mcneese was a 3 point underdog. With 5 minutes left in the 4th q mcneese was up 35-7, was ahead in total yards 550-130. Even if they aren't decent those stats are impressive and worthy of at least staying where you are not falling.

So if App is a bad team and they beat Montana, clearly Montana should be a worse team and not ranked higher than them.

This...in the first 3 weeks of the season, if you get a head to head you have to look at it. Sure it's much different in week 12 when a 4-6 team knocks of a 9-1 in conference. But what else do we have to go by? Again I'm not defending App for getting their doors blown off at the Rock, but if you are calling Citadel a top 10, top 5, team, the sweetheart of the week, you are giving them credit. You can't both give credit and say App sucks. Records are ridiculous if you are going to honestly sit here and say that Montana's thrilling wins over USD and Liberty are so much better than losing to Eastern Carolina.

yes, I'd rather have those thrilling wins than the thrilling loss and I do not believe App is better than Montana on a nuetral field and I also don't care where Montana is ranked. I do know that both of those teams (App & Montana) should both have a steep upside from here on out but neither is better than the other right now and neither is probably top 10 material right now.

But your opinion is just that and not widely shared so you'll just have to live with the thought your have it right, just like the rest of us do.

ursus arctos horribilis
September 18th, 2012, 11:41 AM
Oh, and I can easily see Montana dropping the next two games that should be able to exploit us and make this fairly easy for everyone as well. But if they don't then that steep upside is being scaled quickly.

We are very vulnerable to NAU and EWU right now and it's not a good time to be playing them so you'll be able to probably bump this and say "SEE, I TOLD YOU SO!"

I wouldn't do that because a poll is point in time, not based on projections. I was only saying as of today, I don't think you can rank Montana ahead of a team that beat them, regardless of location. If Montana were to drop both, even one of those, yes it would be a moot point - but it wouldn't solidify or do damage to my current point of view. I have no clue if Montana or App is a better team, I can only go by what happened head to head. FWIW, I have App at 16 and Montana 17 this week.

Not necessarily. Even the definition of a poll is clearly subjective to people on here. The poll is going to be subjective too. Not all people believe that a poll should simply be point in time. IMO, the goal of a poll is to attempt to pick the 25 best teams. Not the 25 teams who have won specific games, but the 25 best teams in my mind. I'll base the judgment off results, but not exclusively. I'm not going to rank a FCS team simply because they got lucky enough to have one of the worst FBS schools on their schedule and get a win out of it.

Agreed and I can see that perspective all day long - App or Montana within 1 or 2 spots either direction playing the 2 wins card or the if it was at Montana, maybe they win by a touchdown - I guess I was just blown away by how much disparity there was on a whole

Troof, App took a big hit due to perceptions which are very likely to change if The Citadel keeps up the superlative play and that loss won't look as shocking as it did last week to a lot of people.

Hell, JMU didn't even give up as many points to WVU as App St. did to The Citadel! This one did hurt App St., not so much in the fact that they lost, but that it was that ugly hurt them big time in the style point category. I am not convinced they can come out the of the SoCon with a playoff spot yet. Montana win is bigger now than ever and is their saving grace. I see GSU and Samford both as challenging, and the rivalry with Furman one never knows what will happen. 1-2 in those games leaves App on the brink of playoff elimination.
