Nice read from the Shreveport Times with lots of quotes from SLC-related folks including former I-AA Waves guest/SLC Commish Tom Burnett on the 'end' of I-AA fooball...

I-AA football nears the end
Name change could come as soon as 2007.

When Southland Conference football coaches go to Lake Charles on Wednesday for the conference's annual media days, it will likely be the last time they go as members of NCAA Division I-AA.

"I do believe this will be the last year that we'll be called I-AA," Southland Conference commissioner Tom Burnett said. "I'm not exactly sure if that means the I-As won't be known as the I-As. We have been concentrating solely on our own label and trying to market it."

The I-AA label was almost shed this spring. During the NCAA's April meetings, a name change for I-AA was on the agenda. It didn't pass, but not because of lack of interest. Instead, there was concern over getting the right name for the group.

If you're wondering just why Division I-AA schools want to change their name, there are several reasons. First, and perhaps foremost, is a perceived image of inferiority during recruiting.

I just hope they make it marketable and find a way to give these good players exposure.

What would I-AA.org do when this happens? I guess I-AA.org would not fit the tier anymore. Ralph, what happens when this change occurs? Is this something you are happy about or are you trying to get them to stop?

I don't think it happens. BCS schools don't want this.

The change is something I opposed at first but since the NCAA is going to throw extra money at it now I am just hoping for the best.

You better be! We need you as one of the few faces in the media to help pub this division, whatever they are going to call it. I heard that Playoff Championship Series could be what our playoff tier will be. Have you looked into names for the new site and I mean would you just change around I-AA.org or would you totally revamp it? I think AGS is getting pretty well known. You thought about turning it into the actual site?

I think you are wrong..

IMO, BCS could care less.

It's the I-a's (Little a on purpose) from the SBC, The MAC, The WAC, and even CUSA, that like to use the "We're Division I, They are not", thing against us when they are recruiting the same kids we are and have to tell some ignorant single Mom that we are Division II and not worthy of their precious chillren. Because their little angel won't get a REAL Degree from a REAL College.

Just say no to A's...

WE ARE DIVISION I

It's basically a done deal guys...not and if but a when. It was going to be in place for this season except they couldn't agree on a new name in time for all of the publication deadlines.

So did the Captain win the coin toss, or screw it up? Did he say something like "We'll kick to the wind" like good old Abner Haynes from the 1961 AFL championship game? Or did he get things right?
