This offseason was an interesting once. 7 out of 10 assistant coaches left, 4 of which are now at the Whee. For the first time in a decade, ASU has an offensive coordinator. The Chosen One has returned to the mountain after a roundabout which included stints in Toledo and Miami and has assembled a mostly-new staff who are coaching a mostly-young team.

The ASU team of 2012 has largely been under the radar in preseason due to the vast amounts of unknown. Yes they are ranked high in the polls, but that is based on the past rather than the future.

This season will be one giant interstellar overdrive. 11 games in 11 weeks. No break until the final week. ECU this week, Montana the next, Coastal later this month and one of the deepest SoCons in a long time to endure. No one on the mountain wants to go through another 2011. Yes it was an 8-4 season, but that record masked a lot more than people realize.

So after an offseason that included coaching turmoil and wondering why media markets are more important than winning programs, now it's time to get things underway.

Thank God the last 12 months are over. Time to move on.

Mr. C
September 1st, 2012, 12:51 PM
Thoughts on the first half:

ASU's defense is as good as advertised. ECU only scored once on the Mountaineer D starting from 18 yards out.

The offense has moved the ball as you would expect from a Satterfield team. 263-144 in favor of ASU in total offense.

The pace of this game started so quick with both offenses racing the tempo. By the end of the half both sides were gassed.

The team in better condition will win this one and I'm betting that is App State.

Mr. C
September 1st, 2012, 12:52 PM
Jamal Jackson 14-of-21 for 196 in the first half, zero picks. Tony Washington 6-82, Malachi Jones 5-69 in the passing game. 16 carries for 67 yards rushing is enough to keep ECU's defense honest.

Mr. C
September 1st, 2012, 12:54 PM
ECU's Rio Johnson is 13-of-23 for 71 yards, with 1 TD and 1 pick. He also missed a wide-open receiver for what would have been an early TD.

Michael Dobson has 8 carries for 43 yards and Reggie Bullock has 7 carries for 30 yards, with 4 catches for 3 yards.

Didn't know what to expect from the offense today but overall I'm very very happy with the way we looked on both sides. You can already see the difference in the play calling. Very impressed with Jackson, and a big game for him could have been even bigger if he didn't miss some easy throws. He looks good though, should contend for 1st team SoCon as expected. WR depth looks great even with price out (Malachi was very impressive for a true freshman). O-line held up much better then I expeted, and Miller had some real nice runs.

Just got worn down in the 4th which is to be expected when it's a hundred degrees outside and you have 22 less scholarships. Still, great effort and our starters had a great showing for 3 quarters. I think this is going to be a fun couple of years with this young talent.

Couldn't agree more, we played solid on both sides of the ball for three whole quarters. I was really impressed with the O-line especially with the run game. They did a good job of opening up some good holes for our backs. Jamal looked sharp on his reads in both passing and rushing, that first drive was excellent. Washington really showed us today what he can do with his route running and catching ability, he had several grabs that impressed me with his hand strength. Miller and Chisholm played just as advertised, a good 1-2 combo in the backfield.

Hate to find out about Price's suspension for today's game and Montana next week, I was really excited to see what he could do against stout competition. Malachi did a great job filling in for him today, he is definitely going to be a great receiver for years to come. McElfresh looks like a smaller version on Matt Cline, good hands, and willing to lower the shoulder and fight for some extra yards.

Defense today looks like they could be the best in the FCS this season. Kimbrough and Grier are studs in the middle of the field and are going to wreak havoc on the triple option teams in the SoCon. Troy Sanders made some good plays in one on one situations and played a good role in the run defense as well. I think he is hitting even harder this season than last year. McCray seemed to be pretty quiet today and wasn't as sharp on his press coverage. Just as I was surprised with the O-line today, I was equally impressed with our D-line. They showed a solid pass rush today and forced EZU to throw much earlier than they wanted.

Special teams was definitely our weakest phase of the game today. Coverage and blocking need a lot of work, but it was to be expected with a new staff. I hope we can utilize Tacoi in the return game, he was very elusive on his one reception today and had JJ not over thrown him, he would have scored in the 4th when he burnt everyone.

Overall I'm really excited about this team as it seems that we have the right guys on the field and the right coaches on the sideline. Next week can't get here fast enough!!!!

Just read the article from The Watauga Democrat. http://www2.wataugademocrat.com/ASU_Sports/story/Pirates-convert-ASU-mistakes-into-victory-id-008884

I hope the hand injury for Chisholm isn't bad. He was looking good today and is a really good complement to the outside speed of Miller. The loss of Middleton is much more serious since his backup is Krah, A true freshman. I don't like the idea of that at all. ESP Because of this: http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=322450149

Montana had a solid game against South Dakota today with 568 yards of offense (315 rushing, 253 passing). Even though South Dakota isn't a premier team, our Defense is going to be key next week and we're gonna need as much experience as possible.

Apparently it's now confirmed that over 300 people, including some Marching Mountaineers, were treated for heat-related illnesses at the game. Not to mention the players going down like dominoes with cramps. I know I felt like **** on the ride back yesterday.

I've seen cases where snow and rain have changed games, but I'd never seen heat affect players like that before.

I've been at both games(Wofford and ECU) when it was hot as Haiti. I believe yesterday was worst than Wofford. One of my friends was at the last ECU game in 2009. He said it was hotter in 2009. If you remember that game, ECU was the one that ran out of gas in 2009(we almost caught them). I guess the roles were reversed yesterday.

The biggest difference between 2009 and Saturday was in 09 it was pretty hot for Boone (mid to upper 80's) that week during game prep and this past week was more like the week before Wofford most days (Wofford week was even cooler). Doesn't seem like much of a difference but these past few weeks have been pretty cool compared to earlier this summer and no matter how many gassers you run and how hard you work nothing can simulate what we faced. Playing a game in Greenville at 12:00 on Labor Day weekend was hot. What a shock.

The game changed in exactly 3 minutes. We kick a FG to make it 14-13 at the 2:19 mark of the 3rd. They return the KO for a TD, 21-13. We go three and out (Jackson missed an open TE which would have been good for a 1st down). Getr hit with a kick interference call on the punt giving them the ball near midfield. We then get a highly questionble pass interference call on a 3rd and 9 play giving them a first near our 40. They score five plays later at 14:19 in the 4th. Score is now 28-13. Heat begins to take its toll, ballgame over. Other than the historical Jerry Moore not-so-special teams play I was very pleased with what I saw. If we can stop the injury bug this bunch will win a lot of games.
