Appalachian State Issues an Open Invitation to Adam Sandler
Appalachian State University Sports Information, Mike Flynn
http://www.i-aa.org/article.asp?articleid=70435
ASU chancellor Dr. Kenneth E. Peacock extended an open invitation to actor Adam Sandler, star of The Longest Yard, to attend an Appalachian home football game during the 2005 season. Sandler’s character in the film recalls his playing days at Florida State, in which the Seminoles would always “open the season by whipping an overmatched opponent like Appalachian State.” ...

It was a dumb arse Hollywood comment by Sandler, anyway since ASU has NEVER played Florida State. In addition, ASU has done OK vs I-A opponents through the years..better than the AVERAGE I-AA program.
Of course I can understand why he didn't use other SoCon teams as examples of his FSU's patsy teams. 'Cause back in the day, FSU had trouble with Furman ..losing to them twice, tied Citadel 0-0 in 1960, GSU held the Semiholes to a 28-10 game, and even the lowliest of the SoCon teams, VMI beat them in the 1950's.
As for App State, they beat U.S. Car a couple seasons after they stomped a 52-12 mudhole in the Semiholes butts. Not much to brag about, but neither was FSU in '73.

Chances of Sandler coming to a game in Boone? Even worse than beating LSU this fall.

Saavy move by the new ASU chancellor though!
When ASU was I-A at one point FSU wouldnt play ASU. ASU used to be better than FSU. This must have been right when Bobby Bowden came to FSU because before that even Duke could beat FSU.

Certainly is, but makes much more sense than the idiot using the name of a real school that FSU had NEVER played....plus one who except for the last couple years has done decently vs I-A's.
Sandler...what a dope. Burt never would have said such idiot tripe. He never needed to.

Almost all of Sandler's movies get trashed by reviewers because they are typically comprised of juvenile humor and just out right weird stuff that a lot of people "don't get" (because they need to be thinking like a 12 year old) :D .
People seem to either think his stuff is really funny, or they think it is the dumbest stuff they have ever seen (there is really not much in between).
Personally, I think most of his stuff is frickin hilarious (Waterboy...c'mon, it is so stupid, I laugh my a$$ off everytime I see it...or Bob Barker beating the crap out of him in Happy Gilmore...that never gets old in my book :p) I like how most of the time he is usually the butt of his own jokes.
As for making a poke at App, Sandler is always making inside jokes and I am sure he is picking on the ASU guy on the set. But really, who cares (no one is taking this too seriously are they)? ...surely no one thinks one line in a Sandler movie will vastly change America's perception of football at ASU??

Personally, I don't have a problem with it. It is free nationwide exposure of our school. Most people won't remember what school was named, but none the less, it exposed ASU to an audience that esle wise would never have heard of our regional school.

Wow guys this really isn’t that big of a deal. When I heard that ASU was going to be mentioned in this movie I thought it was pretty cool. Some guy that was on the production team played for ASU, or so I have read, and it was a funny jab at him. Its fans picking on fans like you see every day on here. We all want national coverage as I-AA fans so be happy that you got it. The fans that will recognize App St's name will realize that they aren’t a crappy program and realize the joke for what it is and to the fans that know very little about I-AA really wont care and will most likely not remember it 5 mins after it is said.
As far as Adam Sandler movies go some people must find him pretty funny because of how thick his pockets are and how coveted he is as an actor. But you don’t have to like him because that’s our right. I will be paying my $8 to watch this movie though. Watched the original last night and cant waite to see this version.

The thing is, outside of IAA circles and the geographic area around Boone, where Appalachian St is fairly well respected, most people wouldn't even know there's a school named Appalachian St and if it was they would think it was a joke. No smack intended towards ASU, and being in the IAA circle I greatly respect them, but the name, to someone not in the know, does sound funny. Hey, appreciate the free press - I always liked the Delaware jibe they had in Wayne's World - you gotta be able to laugh at yourself too.

I don't mind the comment at all, it gets ASU's name out there, not bad pub.
I also like the Chancellor standing up for the school and if Sandler shows up for a game even better (I doubt it though).

Complain? Heck no they got money for renting Fouts Field to them and the producers gave them all the football gear they bought for the film after it was over. I've been told they used the jerseys in practice for quite awhile.

When the original version was being shot at Georgia State Prison in Reidsville, Ga. I lived about 15 miles from the prison, I was a corrections officer there. Everyone around this area was just buzzing with all the excitement of the actors being in town. I actually liked Eddie Albert better than Burt. Mr. Albert was the nicest person. Bernadette Peters, she was a looker!!!! A lot of the officers actually worked in the movie. I will never forget the excitement when the producers decided to let Spider (inmate barber) play in the movie. He was blown away. Now Burt was a little taken. An armed robber and murder. So funny. The cheerleaders were actually female impersonators from the a section of the prison called L-Building. YES!!!! They were gay.
I will go and watch Adam Sandler's version. I guess it will be just as entertaining.

The original was a terrible movie as well ... although the loss of Caretaker brought water to my eyes. So how could a remake be any worse? ... maybe I shouldn't say anything, it's an Adam Sandler movie.
From South Park:
Producer: Watch this: AWESOM-O, given the current trends of the movie-going public can you come up with an idea for a movie that will break a hundred million box office?
Cartman: Um... okay. How about this: [the staffers take pen to paper and anticipate the ideas] Adam Sandler is like, in love with some girl, but then it turns out that the girl is actually a ...golden retriever, or something.
Staffer 2: [thinking over this idea, then write it down] Oh, perfect!
Staffer 3: We'll call it "Puppy Love"!
Staffer 2: Give us another movie idea, AWESOM-O!
Mitch: Yeah yeah!
Staffer 3: Let's hear it!

...the irony of the two films is that the original was a "vehicle" for Burt Reynolds to be "Burt Reynolds" (at the time, anything he did would do well at the box office).
...and 30 some odd years later, the remake is pretty much the same...a "vehicle" for Adam Sandler to be "Adam Sandler".
Neither actor would probably be confused as a "thespian".
(though Sandler did get good reviews for his serious turns Punch Drunk Love and Spanglish)
for the comment earlier about it being almost scene for scene the same....I thought that was why they called it a "remake" ;)
2005 = less charm and more violence...sounds like a summer box office winner to me!

The comment about no one outside the geographic area around Boone not knowing there is a school named Appalachian.
Could be true because there are very uninformed people everywhere. ASU has alumni many times over from every state in the Union and 60 or 70 foreign countries. Florida (every county in Florida is represented), Georgia, etc and many northern states have always been extremely well represented on the ASU campus every year going back 30 or 40 years.
When I worked on master's in Pennsylvania, I never ran in to anyone who had not heard of ASU and didn't know something about it.
ASU football has been or will have played at full stadiums at Hawaii, Wyoming, Auburn, U South Carolina (80K), LSU (90K), Kansas, NC State, ECU, Marshall, Ball State, Bosie State (not packed lol), Clemson, Wake Forest (21 times), Montana, Virgina Tech, U of North Carolina, Southern Miss, etc etc. Not to mention TV sports coverage of those games and countless others.
Do the math.
Also, at one time, Appalachian was rated with the likes of Columbia University's school of education as one of the top two or three in the nation in the fields of teaching and school administration. It's accounting dept in rated among the very top in the nation.

I was suppose to see it tonight, but all 12 showings of it here at the Cinamark in Scranton were sold out. Obviously people aren't buying the reviews. I go to maybe 2 movies a year in the theatre, it has to be somethin to catch my attention. No matter what the reviews say i think it'll be funny. Some people take life and other things way to seriously. If it's anything closely related to Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy, Water Boy or even the Wedding Singer it'll be decent.

Didn't like the original Psycho that much either. Naked-woman-in-the shower scene kind of lost its uniqueness in the 30 year interim, too.
Original Hitchcock movies in B&W are in a class by themselves. e.g. Birds. Nobody could come close to that classic.
Rok, come to think of it, though, Burt seems much more like a QB than Adam Sandler. Sandler-more like a slapstick QB. Thus, those who have NOT seen the original will likely enjoy this re-make much more???

I don't like hearing I-AA being referred to as any of those things either, but I know the quality of football that teams in I-AA play, or at least are capable of. Don't you think that fans of D-II teams hate to hear what a shame it is that a I-AA team has to beat up on a D-II team? It is all relative.
