Great, the game is being shown on a network most of the country cannot receive. Great job SoCon.

To be specific the reason it is on TV at all is because Furman set it up and is in charge of the broadcast on CSS, SoCon does not even get credit for this one unfortunately.

Good analysis considering it is week one and no one really knows what any team has.

Surprised?

Like day follows night, App State fans complain about the SoCon. No mention that two of the conference teams are on ESPN3 this weekend. Just that a game that was not supposed to be televised around the region is now, wait for it, not televised around the region.

Yes, the two SoCon teams playing BCS opponents this weekend are on ESPN3.

If you are happy with the SoCon coverage, that is great. Is it better than nothing? Absolutely. Is it better than PBS? Maybe. I just think it is disappointing that streaming internet coverage is all we've got. I can hook up my computer to the TV and make it work but it is far from ideal. I'd like to be able to watch my team at a sports bar and have an actual viewing party. Considering that I only live 100 miles from my school, I don't think that is too much to ask. When compared to what the Big Sky and CAA have got in terms of TV deals, it pales in comparison. I think that the SoCon has too many quality football programs to be off of TV (unless facing an FBS team) all together.

I don't necessarily disagree with you. I do think competition for TV airtime in the most football saturated area of the country is not as simple as a snap of the fingers. I also realize the SoCon could do better.

Perhaps I'm just myopic, but I cannot imagine that the SoCon administration is just sitting on the sideline letting the most coveted form of advertisement of their conference go on without a fight. I just anticipate that there is so much competition for the football dollar that it is not as easy as wishing upon a star. I anticipate networks would oblige if the SoCon would be willing to play their games on Wednesday nights or pony up a lot more cash.

In any event, I'm just not all that into whining.

Heaven forbid any SoCon team have a decent regional following that would like to watch their team's games on television...

Furman Kicks Off 2012 Football Season Saturday At Samford

Game release:
http://www.furmanpaladins.com/sports/m-footbl/2012-13/2012_Furman_Football_Game_Notes_-_Stats.pdf

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman football kicks off its 2012 football campaign this Saturday when the Paladins travel to Birmingham, Ala., to take on Southern Conference rival Samford. Kickoff for the CSS televised contest at Seibert Stadium is set for 4:30 p.m. ET (3:30 CT) at Brooks Stadium.

Chuck Hussion will provide the televised play-by-play call and former Paladin All-America center Corey Stewart color commentary.

Saturday's game will mark the first season inaugural SoCon game for Furman since the Paladins defeated Elon, 24-7, in the 2003 lid lifter in Paladin Stadium. The last time Furman opened a campaign with a league road contest was in 1975 against VMI.

I'm sorry, where did I complain? It should be no surprise that a SoCon game is not easily available. It's not a complaint, more an accurate observation. But, by all means, try to paint all ASU with the same brush. xawesomex

I'm with you, especially whining about others whining. Most of us would have been happy with maintaining the SportSouth status quo. Perhaps that decision was taken out of the SoCon's hands, but of course we'll never know for sure. Many of us would simply like better options.

I do believe that here in ATL I'll be able to get both App/ECU and Furple/Sammy. Nice way to start the season. Good opening games...I'm hoping I can stream the UTC and Elon games as well.

Samford Goes Back To Work On Furman

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford football team returned to practice Tuesday afternoon as it continues to prepare for Saturday's season-opening game against Southern Conference rival Furman. The Bulldogs worked out for about an hour and a half in shells Tuesday.

The Bulldogs return eight starters on offense this season. Samford co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Travis Trickett said the experience of the team has shown during preseason practices.

“The guys have bought in to what we're doing,” Trickett said. “We had some experience last year, but it was young experience, and they've really taken the next step. Being veterans, they are practicing the way they are supposed to practice and doing the little things the way they are supposed to do. Everything we ask, as far as the intangibles go, these guys take it to the next level.”

The Samford offense will face an experienced Furman defense in Saturday's season-opening game. The Paladins return eight of 11 starters on the defensive side of the ball. Trickett said he knows his unit will face a tough challenge on Saturday.

In the FCS Huddle: Sports Network Week 1 Preview

Furman Paladins (0-0) at Samford Bulldogs (0-0), 4:30 p.m. (Charter/CSN Sport Southeast)

Series record: Furman leads, 8-6

Last meeting: Samford 26, Furman 21 (Oct. 8. 2011)

What to know: Last year, Samford snapped a seven-game series losing streak to capture its first victory over Furman since 1969. The Bulldogs finished in the middle of the conference with a record of 4-4. Running back Fabian Truss and fellow junior wide receiver Kelsey Pope played exceptionally as sophomores last year.

First and foremost, both teams will have to replace experienced quarterbacks that had a large part in their success. Samford lost Dustin Taliaferro (2,301 yards, 14 TD) while Furman lost Chris Forcier (2,265 yards, 23 TD). Both losses hurt equally because each team is trying to progress with a steady signal- caller.

The Paladins have only kicked off the season versus a Southern Conference foe once since 1975. In coach Bruce Fowler's first season, Furman won games against Wofford, Appalachian State and Chattanooga, but lost critical home games versus Samford and Elon. The Bulldogs added Memphis transfer Andy Summerlin, who was 45-of-94 for 469 yards in five games for the Tigers, including two starts.

It's a high-risk, high-reward scenario in Week 1 and that's what SoCon football is all about.

Prediction: Furman 26, Samford 21

Football Prepares For Season-Opener Against Furman

Gameday Central:
http://samfordsports.com/sports/2012/8/13/FB_0813121549.aspx

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford football team practiced for about an hour and a half in shells Thursday afternoon at Seibert Stadium. The Bulldogs are continuing to prepare for Saturday's season-opening game against Southern Conference rival Furman.

Samford and Furman will be meeting for the 15th time, with Furman holding an 8-6 advantage in the series. Since Samford joined the Southern Conference prior to the 2008 season, three of the four meetings in the series have been decided by five points or less, including last season's 26-21 Samford win in Greenville, S.C.

Samford assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Bill D'Ottavio, filling in for head coach Pat Sullivan as he recovers from a bout with pneumonia, talked about a few of the keys to Saturday's game.
