Record setting quarterback Martin Hankins is no longer a member of the Lions’ football team head coach Dennis Roland announced. “Martin made the decision that he believes is best for himself at this time,” said the first year head coach. ...

Big blow for the Lions. At least they still have Felton Huggins at receiver. You have to wonder if Hankins is planning on following Mumme. I, for one, hate seeing this type of stuff.

Big news!! How will this affect the Lions season now? Do they have a decent back-up QB who can take over and carry the team? This works out well for other teams in the Southland though. :) :D

I still can't get comprehend this...

Southeastern was definitely going to alter the standings as I felt they could compete right away in the top tier of the SLC. This is definitely a blow after already losing their head coach to I-A.

Had I known this last week, SE LA would not have made my top 25, I thought they were going to surprise some people this year.

Really disappointed in the loss of Hankins. Don't know why he wanted to leave, but don't look for him to follow Mumme to New Mexico State.

Tough blow for you guys. :(
Be sure and keep us updated if you find out any info as to why he decided not to return. Hankins is certainly talented, and I hate to see a kid like that leave without ever hearing the reasoning behind it. Thanks in advance.

wow, that's a shocker! Maybe the new coach's system wasn't to his liking? Mumme was all about airing it out, which i'm sure hankin's liked.

Roland said "Offensively, we’ll try to mirror the current scheme as much as we can in an effort to build on the experience the players have already built up over the past few years."

It will not be the same without Hankins at SELA. I'm prediciting a rough season for the Lions.

Ditto! They weren't in my top 25 (#27) but I thought they were a sleeper to make some noise...

According to an SLC insider in Zems, he thinks it was a change in coaching philosophy that sent Hankins packing...
Quarterback Martin Hankins has left the Southeastern Louisiana football program. SLU made the announcement on Thursday. The spin from the team and coaches is that this move is not a big deal and the team maybe better off without Martin. This does not appear to be a move strictly bound by a desire to be with Coach Hal Mumme. No school was mentioned as a possible transfer site. It appears that it maybe more in line with a difference in philosophy by the new coaching staff. SLU picked up speedster Jerald Wilson from Auburn in the spring and a more diverse offense is expected. Coach Rollin in fact mentioned that the team didnot need to throw for 400 yards per game to win. Trey Willie will enter his senior year as the starting quarterback.

I have heard Valdosta State is where he is headed. Any truth?

That would be correct. He'll be moving on to Valdosta State to play for Chris Hatcher.
I've talked to a couple of people close to Hankins and they tell me he simply didn't get along well with Dennis Roland and wasn't comfortable with his coaching style. I find that hard to believe considering DR is a straight shooter and is generally regarded as positive around his players, but I guess he has his reasons.
The way I read it, DR is more about team and less about individuals, and even though we'll run the same offense, he wants to establish more balance and be more physical on the whole. While I think Hankins is an oustanding QB with excellent passing skills, he has a HUGE EGO and I'm sure Roland's attempt to put his stamp on things didn't mesh well with that.
I have no ill feelings towards Hankins. If he doesn't feel comfortable being here, he needs to move on. While we won't be the same without him, I do feel like Trey Willie is talented enough to be very productive in our scheme and we'll probably see increased production from our running game. One thing we do have are a lot of big, physical bodies up front and two VERY TALENTED tailbacks who can make big plays. We'll be just fine.

I agree, things won't be the same without Hankins, but I still feel very good about our ability to produce yards and points offensively with Trey Willie. He performed very well in a backup role last year and is probably more physically talented than Hankins, particularly in the mobility area. Obviously I would be lying if I said he was as talented a passer as Martin, but honestly, there isn't THAT much dropoff. He lacks starting game experience and hasn't had to perform in clutch situations but he has very good arm strength and can make all the tough throws. I'm sure we'll tweak some things and rely more on our running game than in the past, but we'll still be able to spread the field and chunk it with the best of 'em.
As for whether we'll have a rough year, that remains to be seen. Honestly, I think our success or failure hinges more on how we progress defensively in our new, aggressive 4-3 scheme than who plays quarterback. We're gonna be good offensively regardless. Maybe a little different, and maybe not as prolific in terms of passing yardage, but we'll still be able to put pressure on opposing defenses. If we can slow people down and get off the field on third down, we'll be highly competitive in a majority of our games.

From everything I've heard about Hankins leaving, it sounds like he is severely lacking in the maturity area. Word is that he had a terrible spring and really didn't work very hard. Supposedly, Willie had an outstanding spring and was the better of the two QBs. I've also heard that the team is solidly behind Willie and his improved leadership skills and was not impressed by Hankins' lack of leadership and work ethic during the spring. It sounds like Hankins was more concerned about his own stats than the success of his team. Wouldn't most QBs want to see a better running game, to take some of the pressure off them? He should put up big numbers at Valdosta (one of Hal Mumme's old destinations, before Kentucky), but it will do little to help him develop. Hankins' lack of mobility made it doubtful he was going to get much of an NFL look anyway. I can't see this move helping him a great deal.

He had a FA grade anyway. he was listed at 6'2 at one point. he is not even 6'0. He wasn't gonna get a look no matter how mature. His size turned teams off to begin with.

Hatcher runs the exact same offense at VSU ... it will be a perfect fit for Hankins ... he'll get to soothe what appears to be a rather large ego ... in a pass-happy offense that should get him the #'s to warrant Harlon Hill consideration ....
If he was afraid of the competition in camp ... the Lions will be a better "TEAM" without him ....

... he is not even 6'0. ...He was taller than me when I interviewed him last year and I'm six foot.

You are incorrect. Hankins is every bit of 6-1 if not closer to 6-2. I've looked him eyeball to eyeball many times and I'm a shade over 6-1 in bare feet, 6-2 with normal shoes on. When he arrived on campus, he was a scrawny guy about 180 pounds soaking wet and appeared to be right at 6-0 tall. But when I first met in person, I was shocked to see that he was at least my height if not taller. That said, he still doesn't have prototypical NFL size and I would agree with you that he would rate as a free agent at best at this point. But he's bigger than you give him credit for.

Martin leaving looks like a big blow and advantage to outsiders, but after being on the inside for a year, everything will be okay. Yeah, I'm sad to see him go and he's a great guy, but I'm very happy for Trey. He's an incredible athlete and humble guy. After talking to two players, one of them was shocked and sad about Hankins leaving, while the other one was completely angry for him abandoning the team going into the Southland Conference. Trust me, Trey is going to shine and lots of players can't wait to see him play this season. Everytime he would get ready to go out and play, the team would get wound up. I should've known things were looking more up for him during spring and not so good for Martin. Around campus and athletics, all I would hear in good fun was "Trey Wille for Heisman in '05" and talks of making t-shirts with the saying. As for Martin leaving, he's more than likely going to Valdosta which wouldn't suprise me. Wow, I really can't wait to see the Lions play, especially Trey. I think he's going to shock the hell out of our competition!

I was really looking forward to seeing Hankins play in the Lions travel up here to Greeley in the fall. It does sound like this other guy (Trey) may be even better.
