Fordham was recently named the #18 Most Beautiful Campus in America in some survey. In recognition of this event, a Fordham poster posted this message on the Fordham board -- which I have lifted verbatim.

Very Very nice. The only bad thing about Furman's campus is that there are no old buildings. They tried to move the old bell tower which collapsed during the attempt:bawling:

Sorry, but that list is sort of bunk. There are some nice schools on that list, but there are some campuses that are not so spectactular looking. And where are Princeton, Richmond or Sweet Briar, all schools that have been ranked the most beautiful by the Princeton Review. I mean # 27 JMU is a great school, but come on, it does not really compare to Richmond in looks. Here is a selection of images from UR.

First off is the Library, which overlooks Westhampton Lake
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/boatlibr/images/hires/0.jpg

Now we move next door to Ryland Hall, one of the older academic buildings on campus.
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/rylandha/images/hires/0.jpg

Here is Jepson Hall, home of the Leadership School
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/jephall/images/hires/0.jpg

Next door to Jepson Hall is the new Weinstein Hall for the Social Sciences
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/weinstei/images/hires/0.jpg

Next is the Tyler Hanyes Commons Building, which crosses over the Lake, connecting the two sides of the Campus, one of the more modern looking buildings on campus, but still ok...
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/commons/images/hires/0.jpg

On the other side of the Lake is the recently renovated Gotwald Science Center
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/gottwald/images/hires/0.jpg

Here is the Modlin Art Center
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/modlin/images/hires/1.jpg

Next door is the Booker Music center
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/bookerha/images/hires/0.jpg

Across Westhampton Green is North Court, one of the original buildings of Westhampton College, and still a dorm and classroom building. A good portion of the movie "Cry Wolf" was recently filmed here
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/north/images/hires/0.jpg

Behind North Court next to the Lake is the Greek Theater, great for concerts or just getting some sun.
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/greekthe/images/hires/1.jpg

Back on the other side of Campus are the two Graduate Schools, first Robins School of Business.
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/business/images/hires/0.jpg

And second Richmond Law.

Love that Fordham campus... took my own tour of it during the fall. Colgate and Richmond look wonderful too. I'd say Bucknell is 'ok' at best. I was kinda disappointed when I saw it for the first time, although the stadium is in a nice spot.

Princeton is in a nice location but I think it is quite below most of these places. It is archetectually inconsistent, and there doesn't seem to be symmetry to the place. They also have a big tower on campus... that rules out 'quaint' in my mind.

Actually, PU has three towers - Fine Hall, Blair Tower and the Nassau Hall rotunda. Fine Hall is the ugly one, right on Washington Road. They threw that one up on the early 1960's, and I don't think it will be around forever. It is also an occasional location for undergraduate suicide.

Most colleges, especially if they are decently old have a cool feeling about them. In addition, college towns are always interesting places to visit. I grew up in a college town and greatly enjoyed all of the extra stuff that was available for me to do as a kid.

UCD isn't going to be on any of those lists, but we take a back seat to no one in architectural diversity - we have buildings with every architectural style of the 20th century as the campus expanded. And we have ducks and lots of squirrels. In any case, here ya go

Not what you think. The Bronx is roaring back to life.

In the late 1970s, Jimmy Carter visited Charlotte Street and called it the worst slum in America. He pledged to turn it around. In 1980, Ronald Reagan came to Charlotte Street and said it was still the worst slum in America to underscore his point that the Carter inner-city policies had failed.

Applications to Fordham took a deep dive. But here's Charlotte Street today:
http://www.brorson.com/TourDeBronx/Streetscape7_CharlotteStThumb.jpg

Here's a wesbite discussing the revitalization of the Bronx.
http://www.pacificislandtravel.com/north_america/eastern_usa/newyork/nyc_southbronx.html

Once the most famous slum in the country, the infamous Charlotte Street (east of Crotona Park and north of Morrisania, now called Charlotte Gardens) is the symbolic ground zero of a revitalization now twenty years in the works. Presidents Carter and Reagan visited the desolate site of wholesale demolition in 1977 and 1980 respectively, and in 1978 Deputy Mayor Hermann Badillo, former Bronx Borough president, began actively seeking to redevelop the South Bronx. By the late 1990s the entire area had become known as the Bronx Miracle, and by the time President Clinton visited Charlotte Street in 1997, it had been transformed into the pleasantly, if eerily, suburban Charlotte Gardens. Elsewhere in the South Bronx, abandoned buildings have been renovated into co-operative apartments; backed by federal funds, private investments and a myriad of involved community groups, retailers long missing in this area – basic ones such as Rite-Aid, Pathmark, Caldor and other chains – have moved in. Aficionados of urban renewal and those fascinated by the unlikely survival of historic districts will love it up here – particularly since people innocuously washing their cars have roundly replaced crack addicts on the streets during daylight hours. That being said, you should still exercise caution in the somewhat downtrodden areas, which still exist.

Meanwhile, here are some pictures of our neighbors directly north of our campus:

The New York Botanical Gardens:

The Bronx Zoo:
http://tastesgood.org/2005/05/29/130953_Bronx_Zoo_002.jpg

Wow! That is damn impressive. I had friends who went to Fordham and I last visited there in the late '80's. At that time, the surrounding area was still scary as hell. I didn't realize how much the area has been revitalized. "The Bronx Miracle" is right!

Truthfully, I have seen people in the river from February to October. (not counting the "polar bears" who go swiming on Newyears day. Mind you it was 85 degrees last new years)

This is "Old Main" at Wofford College. Constructed between 1851 and 1854. Every Wofford graduate has taken at least one class in this building. It was built in the "Italianate" style popular in those days, although most buildings from that era have only one tower. This building is frequently called the "Twin Towers" - a name also applied to a few coeds I remember (No, I don't have any pictures to post of that)

I feel like quoting it again just to piss everybody off. It's nice to see the love given to our campus in this thread, though. Too many still view the Bronx as a place of ridicule as opposed to being a place to go to school or send your kid to. Glad to see the word is starting to spread.

There are really some beautiful campuses out there, though. Love the Montana pictures with the mountains (Montana, duh) in the background and wtf is with that one picture - is that the Northern Lights? Beautiful stuff. I'm also partial to some of the southern schools. Given the great weather the snapshots I see usually have a nice look to them and the buildings are often done in some nice brickwork. If I remember correctly Elon has a beautiful campus that fits that description - can anyone affirm or correct me? And I'm a big fan of consistency in terms of architechture and that's why I'm pleased that Fordham has gotten away from a few folly-type buildings and is back to doing stuff in tune with the look and feel of the campus. Despite the varied architecture, though, that UCD Performing Arts center is pretty sweet. Also a fan of the Fine Arts building and overall campus at GSU.

Good stuff.

I couldn't agree more. All of these pictures show some really amazing places and, if you've spent time there during your own college years, these places become even more special to you.

As for the Bronx, around New York at least, the term "South Bronx" has become really dated. This of course is a great thing for the Bronx and for Fordham -- as the "South Bronx" was said to include some of the worst areas in America and was typically defined as the "area south of Fordham Road." So the name of our school was used to define the location of some of the most desolate neigborhoods in America. That was just horrendous PR for the school.

I think that is the Northern Lights in the UM photo. In early November 2004, I was on a late night flight to Seattle and was stunned by the sight of the Northern Lights through the plane window. One of the most remarkable things I have ever seen. I was wishing I had a camera but nonethless I was remarkably lucky to being flying that night.

I think this is a vastly underappreciated aspect of college campuses that routinely appear at the top of people's lists. There was a period in there in the 50s and 60s where modernism made its way onto college campuses, but most of those buildings now just seem dated and are often getting new facades or flat out being demolished in favour of more classic architecture.

IMO the schools that we all love are the ones that keep in that style. Fordham looks to have done a great job of that. Colgate has as well. Some of the southern schools that we like appear to be similar (albeit with brick instead of stone). I think that's why GSU's new stuff looks good - it keeps with the overall classic theme.

To illustrate my point, Colgate is currently 'rebuilding' its library to the tune of $55 million +. It's about 50 years old (right smack in the modernist movement). In doing so, they're completely obliterating the modernist look as best they can and going with the overall campus look.

The best picture online that I can find is features an addition done in the 80's that masks square, modernist front of the original. If you look behind the tall part, there is a flat, square building. That is the original: a square box. Yea!

I think Richmond got lucky in that they went through a financially difficult time in the 1960's and basically did not build anything. Therefore the campus is exceedingly hemogenous, which allows all the red brick collegic gothic buildings to really shine. There were a few buildings from the 1970's which are more of a post modern take on the true collegic gothic style, but they are definitely inoffensive, and just not as nicely detailed as both the older and now newer buildings. All of UR's newest buildings really embrace the original architecture of the 1914 campus by Ralph Adams Cram, who has been so justly celebrated for his collegic architecture (think Rice, Princeton and others). Most people who walk UR's campus fall in love pretty immediately

That's a very nice library.. good job shooting down that idiotic looking glass dome. Lafayette was in a similar predicament... the old Skillman library, renovated and reopened between 2003-2005, looks much better externally than the old one... which looked more like a medieval fortress, arrow slits and all. I still have my qualms about certain interior spaces though... some spots look like Home Depot/The Brady Bunch era.. while others are much too open. Meanwhile, here is the old Skillman Bastellie.

Nice pix of Case Library, 13. The lighting also was very bad in there in the old days.

Colgate definitely went through its "modernist" (also "impoverished") period; Case, the Kendrick-Eaton-Dodge dormitory (now destroyed), Cutten and Bryan Complexes and Reid Athletic Center were also part of that era, about '57 to '68. They were (and remain) servicable facilities but don't match the classic Colgate quarry brick. Since then, Colgate has made a commitment to construct or rebuild buildings that match those on the Hill. The results are terrific.

Bryan isn't so bad, given it's been built right into the side of the hill. Reid is what it is. If you want to talk about buildings that break the "Colgate mold", Dana and Little should be at the top of the list. Actually, Little is only a few years old, by comparison to the others. The Apartments (all 3 of which are across from the Stadium) also break that mold, although they're off the main campus a bit.

UD's campus is a real asset to the school for recruiting new students and the general impression it leaves with someone seeing the school for the first time. Some of the buildings are very old, but all new ones are done in the Georgian style that was common in the area when UD started in the 1700's. People who just go to a football game really miss out since the football stadium is on the other side of the railroad tracks and there is not much to see there. One thing that has really hurt UD's campus in recent decades is the demise of the mighty American Elm to Dutch Elm disease. This disease has wiped these awesome trees out across the country. If you ever saw pics of the main mall (essentially a green in the center of campus) back in the 80's or earlier, it is amazing how the Elms make the campus look. The elm is the perfect shade tree with a huge/open canopy. The school treats the remaining trees and keeps many of them but a few are lost each year. The replacement trees that are planted are a different species with a similar shape.

Wow, I just posted about Elms on a football board... lol .. it must be off-season ;)

I'm currently in Newark/Wilmington this week on business and had a chance to tour the UD campus. I love the architecture and the historic feel the campus exudes and Newark itself seems like a quality small college town. I can feel the Blue Hen pride just about everywhere I go and I've found everyone here to be extremely warm and friendly. I wish I had more free time to hang out on Main Street.

I can't say I'm AS impressed with Tubby Raymond Field and the immediate area surrounding the athletics facilities but that's probably because my expectations were high coming in. TRF is definitely large (by I-AA standards) but rather bare bones and I can't believe I've actually found a press box that's nearly as small as ours. Regardless, it's still a great venue with lots of history and it's easy to see why the University of Delaware has the tradition of excellence it has.

WOW Great posts. I always thought Coastal was one of the nicest campuses I have ever seen. I still think it is great but some of these other schools I have seen are gorgeous, makes me want to visit them. If I had pics of Coastal I would put some up, but I don't. Anyways, keep posting more pics, I like this thread. ttyl xoxo

Nice pics everyone, i'm too lazy to post up pics of ASU's campus, but to all Appalachian readers out there, I was at the campus today and they have replaced D.D. Doughtery Memorial Librarys'(which stands for Dauphin Disco, the coolest name in the whole world ever taken) classic red shingle roof with one of those ugly green roofs that makes it ugly as sin. This is one of the original buildings on campus, and I think something should be done to preserve its history, that being said, I don't think theres anything that can be done now...

Wagner College on Staten Island, NY is another gorgeous campus, on the former estate of English steamship magnate Sir Edward Cunard (the Lusitania's line). The freshmen dorms have views of the Verrazano Bridge, New York harbor, and the Statue of Liberty.

Lionsrking: UD's Delaware Stadium is a great place to see a game in terms of atmosphere but you are right that the facilities such as the press box are extremely outdated. UD fans have been pushing for major improvements or a new stadium, but the school does not emphasize athletics that much to do anything. Glad to hear you enjoyed your trip.

I don't think any SLC school can compare with the others we have seen. Texas and La just don't have the landscape for schools like that.
LSU has a beautiful campus with the live oaks all over. It's traditionally mentioned as one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. But none of the schools in TX and LA are as old as these northeastern schools.

Down in Louisiana they have perfected the art of under-funding their universities.

I am too ashamed to post any pictures of my school...

Actually I just don't have any on my computer, we have some nice buildings. The school was founded in 1884 so most buildings are from 1920 or earlier or 1970 or later...so we have kind of a gothic 70's retro thing going on.

The older part of campus is actually the nicest and somewhat resembles the architectural style of some of the buildings in this thread. But as a whole nothing compares to some of the pictures I have seen in this thread...even the "poor public southern school" Jacksonville St.

The finest details are even nice at places like Fordham, Furman, Colgate, etc. The overall aesthetic beauty is just amazing.

I am telling you, Louisiana sets the standard for staying behind the rest of the country.

Yeah, it's not much to look at empty, but you put 22k in there and it looks a lot better. As a fan, I can't say I'm really broken up about the pressbox - that's probably the lowest thing of priority I would have about updating the place - I'll never step foot in there and I don't spend a lot of time looking at it during the game so I'd opt for a video board before any pressbox upgrades.

It had potential but they ruined during the 70s when they didn't stay with the gothic style of the older buildings on campus. Not a lot of people know but there are a couple of buildings that are deemed historic. One of the original buildings located in the original quad burned back in 1982, Caldwell Hall...it was a magnificent piece of architecture. The other building in the quad was demolished. It was the library back in the 30's and 40's.

That building that crosses the lake is nice.

PantherRob82

UCD isn't going to be on any of those lists, but we take a back seat to no one in architectural diversity - we have buildings with every architectural style of the 20th century as the campus expanded. And we have ducks and lots of squirrels. In any case, here ya go

UC-Davis has a very modern look to it. Very different from the east coast schools, but very easy on the eyes as well.

There are some really beautiful campuses out there. I wish I could visit them all! Just give me a dorm to stay in and maybe I will.

App's architecture is dissapointing to me because the surrounding area is so beautiful and the buildings look newish and boring. I love Sanford Mall (our quad/mall) and all of campus in the autumn is beautiful. It can't compete with some of these historic campuses though. However, I do love it. Yeah, and "The Big M" is above Butte. Has nothing to do with the city/town, it's about the school.

There also is/was a smaller B above Bozeman. It's been a long time since I was back, so I don't know if it's still there or not.

Many people are surprised at UND's campus, especially after traveling through flat treeless prairie (which has its own stark beauty) to get there.

The University of North Dakota’s 550-acre wooded and landscaped campus, bisected by the scenic English Coulee, features 235 buildings containing 5.25 million square feet of space. The architectural style of the central campus includes classic to modern interpretations of the “collegiate Gothic” theme. The campus is admired for its spaciousness and beauty in all seasons, and particularly for its flowers in summer and fall.

The Sundog photo (which can only happen on very cold sunny days) and the Alerus pictures were winter photos.
http://www.und.edu/dept/our/dimensions/march2005/web_assets/pics/08_Snow.jpgMerrifield Hall

Most of the new buildings going up are "collegiate Gothic", even a new parking ramp and this research building:

http://www.discovery.und.edu/fall_2006/web_assets/graphics/pics/eerc.jpg

The west side campus (Aerospace and Computer Science) is contemporary:

The signature photo is from the REA's opening day. In addition to the main arena, the REA also contains an Olympic-size ice arena that can seat around 1000 and a basketball/volleyball practice complex with four courts that can seat 3300. Much of acreage around the REA is being commerically developed in the same architectural style.
