RULES UPDATED 7/8/2012 FOR UPDATED PICKING SYSTEM!

This game is entering its 4th year on CS.com...AND FIRST YEAR ON AGS!xhypedx. I'm hoping to get to 30, maybe 40 players this year per site. The rules this year are the same as they were last year. I am working on some things to give away this year to the winner/top 3, but won't promise anything until I know it is set in stone and won't change. Due to running this game on two sites there may be a little delay in how long it takes me to get totals updated, as I'll have likely double the number of players. That being said, there will be a change in which poll gets used (rule 3)


The rules are as follows. xrulesx

1. Game will consist of picking the winner of each top 25 game, a couple interesting unranked FCS match ups, and a couple of the high profile FBS match-ups each week. Each correct pick will be worth 1 point.

2. Picks are due by 9AM Central on Saturday. Weeks that have Thursday/Friday games will have a deadline of 4PM Central Thursday/Friday if you wish to have that game count towards your picks. If you get it in late that game will not count towards your total. (re: it will count as you getting it wrong) but will not disqualify picks that have yet to be played.

3. In the past I have used the CS poll, however, trying to total both sites using two different polls will suck ****. Thus the AGS poll will be the poll used. It was very similar to the CS poll last year, and already has the preseason poll out....even I'm not sure if the CS poll is running this year.

4. Schedule of games to pick will be posted by 11PM Central Monday evening, possibly sooner depending on my schedule. That is a full 24 hours sooner than past years, hopefully my work schedule allows it to happen..

5.[/] Pick's will run from preseason AQ and at-large bids, all the way through the title game.

6. Conference AQ and at-large bid picks will be due at the same time as the cut off for the week 1 picks. You may edit your picks for the AQ and AL picks until 9AM Central the Saturday of the first game. NO OTHER EDITED OF PICKS IS ALLOWED DURING THE SEASON. ONCE A PICK IS MADE IT CAN NOT BE CHANGED. Missing a week does NOT disqualify you from playing the rest of the season, neither does missing the first week.

6A. Each correct AQ/AL pick is worth one point. If you correctly pick the team as winning the AQ or at-large bid you will receive 2 extra points. I.E. you pick School A to win the AQ and school B to get an at-large. School A doesn't win the AQ but gets an at-large, and School B get's an at-large. You would get 1 point for correctly having School A in the playoffs, and you would get 3 points for correctly prediction School B would be an at large.

7. Post season game picks will have a weighted scoring system due to fewer games being played. Each round will have a different weight. See the following spoil for how it works

PLAYOFF FORMAT AND SCORING
Everyone picks a winner for each game, and a point-spread. (Pick should be formated as Winning Team by point spread....Team A by 8)
Being that this is the playoffs and there are fewer games each week, and even fewer the week after, etc., each game will be worth more points. Each round will be worth 16 points.
First Round: 4pts/game
Second Round: 2pts/game
Quarterfinals: 4pts/game
Semifinals: 8pts/game
Finals: 16pts

However, since there are much fewer games to choose from and each pick is a 50/50 shot, players will also pick a point spread that your pick will win by. If you correctly pick the winner of a game and you're within 10 points of the actual point spread, you get bonus points. You cannot get bonus points if you we're within 10 points of the actual point spread but picked the losing team. The bonus points will be determined as follows:

Within 0-2 points of actual spread = +5 bonus points
Within 3-4 points of actual spread = +4 bonus points
Within 5-6 points of actual spread = +3 bonus points
Within 7-8 points of actual spread = +2 bonus points
Within 9-10 points of actual spread = +1 bonus points
Within 11 or more points of actual spread = +0 bonus points

So for example, if person A picks Team 1 by 10, and Person B picks Team 2 by 6 and the outcome was Team 1 42 - 38, person A would get (10-4=6) +3 bonus points (in addition to the 2 points for correctly picking the winner) and person B would get 0 points.

This format would give people in the middle of the ranks to jump to the front if they were dead on with their picks, and help decide a winner at the end should two people be tied and making the same picks. But, it will be hard to pick point spreads with too much accuracy due to the craziness and uncertainty that results when two teams that usually never play each other meet.

8. Each player must have a minimum post count of 100 by the pick cut off line of the first week. There is plenty of time to get involved all across the board and get to 100 posts. I will take screen shots to freeze everyone's posts counts at the time of the cut off to see if they meet the required post count. This is to avoid people joining to only play the game (see past issues with elimination games seeing influx of new posters until their team is out then leaving again). If you want to join to play the game, great, just contribute elsewhere. As of the time of this being posted on the board there is something like 59 days to get to 100. For a brand new member who hasn't posted yet that is about 1.7 posts per day.

[B]9. NEW THIS YEAR is a couple ways to earn points. I'm adding a preseason title game prediction. For each team you correctly pick to be in the national title game you'll get 5 points. You'll also get 5 bonus points if you correctly pick the champion. You can earn up to 15 extra points from this.

10.. A tie, in the event of a tie at the end of it all, will revert back to higher standing at end of regular season. If still tied I'll figure it out then.

I know I may upset UAlbany fans, but I think its a Duquesne/Bryant race this year. I think Bryant has a really good shot if they do not stumble in games against Monmouth and CCSU (who they have never beaten). IF they get through those and split with UAlbany/Duquesne I think the Bulldogs have a shot, if they cannot I think Duquesne wins the league outright and gets to the playoffs.

Also, I think Duquense has all summer to prepare for ODU and they will come out with a good game plan and hopefully get the win.

I know that Purdue is not Alabama, BUT they are FBS and COACHED by FORMER EKU head coach (and former EKU player) Danny Hope. He cannot afford to let up on EKU, the hot sea will sear his behind. So IF we are good enough to beat Purdue, we will certainly be good enough to win the OVC. I HOPE it happens, but not putting any $$ on beating Purdue.

Just a quick heads up....As I pointed out in my original picks game Louisville is my second FBS team (I also have family in the Louisville area). Due to those factors I just finalized plans for a trip to the Louisville/Kentucky game Sept 2nd in Louisville.

I'm leaving Cedar Falls Aug 30 and won't be back until very late Monday night Sept 3rd. I'm taking Tuesday Sept 4 off of work to catch up on rest (12 hour drive that I do in one day).

Yes, your posts are up to date. There are many that are on here from before the sheet was made which apparently makes people think that they should go to that effort since it is what they see others have done.

It appears to still confuse some of the later entries so I was suggesting a way to eliminate that problem. I'm not too worried about it so I'll leave you to work it out.

I've been wondering about this as well, but more broadly, to how you go about deciding which teams are likely to perform better or worse than their expectations. From here (http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=charlotte2&page=/cfoot2/news/AGN4512399.htm), for example, we see that three teams - Eastern Washington, William & Mary and Delaware - failed to qualify for the 2011 FCS playoffs after starting the season ranked in the top 5. The other two, Georgia Southern and Appalachian State, both from the Southern Conference, finished No. 4 and 12, respectively. Which seems to have happened regularly in the past; in 2010 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_NCAA_Division_I_FCS_football_season), Montana didn't make the playoffs despite being ranked #2 in the preseason, while Southern Illinois, the Coaches' preseason #5 pick, also failed to make the playoffs.

So the question for me is, which of the preseason picks are not going to go as far as they are predicted? Better, which team is going to come out of nowhere and make a run deep into the playoffs after being ranked low or even unranked at the beginning of the season?

In the 2011 FCS Preseason Coaches Poll, of the the two teams that played for the National Championship, SHSU and NDSU, one was unranked and the other started the season at #11. SHSU would have been #47 in the 'others receiving votes' category.

I expect this season to be somewhat similar to the last two; of the preseason top-5, and of the 2011 final-four teams, only one or two of these will return to make deep runs into the playoffs.

As of right now EVERY SINGLE GAME is at least 2/3's picks of the same team.....The closest picked game is NDSU/CSU, and CSU leads that 65% to 35%, and 1 or two others right at 67% to 33%. After that they start dropping into the 80% to 100% pick ratio very quickly.

I run these as something to do to help keep posters active throughout the season, and am trying to set some prizes up to reward those who play every week/win...thus the 100 post rule (which I lifted off the record because people were asking me to, and to get more players I did. That has bitten me in the *** and I may retroactively put it in).

I do this because I enjoy it, not because I really have time too. I'm not going to waste my time on players who can't follow the few rules I do have.

Listen, if you don't like the rules of not submitting more than one set of picks per week and actually having a vaild screen name and using it then I ask you please don't play.


I work 55+ hours a week (including on weekends), I have a family life I try to maintain, and a social life outside of message boards. I'm going to do everything I can to make sure I save as much time as I cantotaling everything up. If I had the time to write an encryption for every weeks picks that would make Team A true and Team B false and I could just put a "correct answer" into the algorithm and the computer did it for me correctly just with the push of a button, maybe I wouldn't be suck a dick about it. HOWEVER, I don't have the to write that into my sheets, and I would have to redo it every week as the teams would change (actually costing me more time).

The way I'm doing it now is literally hours faster than the way I've done it the last three years on CS.com where everything was pretty much done by hand. However, it still takes a decent amount of time.

It's not that I don't want people playing - which is why I lifted the 100 post rule to begin with. I had a couple guys PM me and say "I'm new the board, won't get to 100, can I still play?" I told every single one of them yes. Now, a couple of them haven't submitted a single set of picks - which is fine. I'd love it if I had 60 AGS and 60 CS submissions every week. Would it take a lot of time? Sure, but with that kind of support behind my game, I would be more than willing to find time - just as I am for people who make an effort to stay involved in the board now. When I go look through a users post history and the only posts I can find are in this thread, the conference preseason over/under threads, and almost nothing else I have a hard time believing they are a "part of this forum". They may be a poster here, but to me that is different than being a part of the forum.


Hell, for 2 or 3 years I was one of them on this site. I have most posts on AGS since April than I did from Dec 08 through April this past year just about. I'm not asking for 100 posts a week, or even 20. I just want to see that the person is here for more than the game. This is a long standing stance of mine...ask any of the guys on CS.com how I felt a couple years ago when a bunch of Liberty ****s joined the board (I mean probably 50-60 of them) strictly to play the elimination game. Quick update....I'm sitting in the lobby at the hospital and can't do anything but wait so I'm working on totaling the picks. I've added a feature this week to quickly see what picks you got wrong (and what others missed as well).

Typically I highlight wrong picks in another document I use and add up there, however, I'm going to start doing that on the totals sheet for easy access to your right and wrong picks.

Also, no e-mail update yet....However, I do move picks from my landing sheet to the totals sheet almost daily (won't happen this week for obvious reasons) so you can see what you've picked, others have picked, or if you've submitted picks for that week.

I'll be sitting around all day tomorrow as well, so I'll likely get it done. I'm about to head "home" (my parents house) for the night though.

To date AGS has a 73.15% correct picks, slightly better than CS's 71.43.

As you can also see, the number of people playing every week is dropping rather quickly. This is very disheartening to see, honestly. Both sites have seen a decline every week, and both are just over half of where they started.

Okay, at an actual computer for the first time this weekend, and it's 14 minutes from over in Iowa....

I do my best to make sure I get everyone's totals correct, but I rely on people checking them to make sure. My accuracy is much better with this new system, compared to previous years.

However, until I figure out how to get Drive to let me input the formula I want counting is done by hand....that and trying to read the formula I want to use is like trying to read Chinese if you aren't familiar with the in depth excel formulas - that and Drive doesn't work quite as well as standard excel with customizing formulas.

Also...remember that the playoffs will have a different scoring system. It will be weighted due to fewer rounds to get full points. The scoring system is as follows (copied right from post 1 of this thread)


Post season game picks will have a weighted scoring system due to fewer games being played. Each round will have a different weight.

PLAYOFF FORMAT AND SCORING:
Everyone picks a winner for each game, and a point-spread.
Being that this is the playoffs and there are fewer games each week, and even fewer the week after, etc., each game will be worth more points. Each round will be worth 16 points.
First Round: 4pts/game
Second Round: 2pts/game
Quarterfinals: 4pts/game
Semifinals: 8pts/game
Finals: 16pts
***Due to 30 (number of points available during each regular season week) not diving equally by the number of games in each round 16 was the number that was chosen when this format was first used...may have to change when playoffs expand to 24

However, since there are much fewer games to choose from and each pick is a 50/50 shot, players will also pick a point spread that your pick will win by. If you correctly pick the winner of a game and you're within 10 points of the actual point spread, you get bonus points. You cannot get bonus points if you we're within 10 points of the actual point spread but picked the losing team. The bonus points will be determined as follows:

Within 0-2 points of actual spread = +5 bonus points
Within 3-4 points of actual spread = +4 bonus points
Within 5-6 points of actual spread = +3 bonus points
Within 7-8 points of actual spread = +2 bonus points
Within 9-10 points of actual spread = +1 bonus points
Within 11 or more points of actual spread = +0 bonus points

So for example, if person A picks Team 1 by 10, and Person B picks Team 2 by 6 and the outcome was Team 1 42 - 38, person A would get (10-4=6) +3 bonus points (in addition to the 2 points for correctly picking the winner) and person B would get 0 points.

This format would give people in the middle of the ranks to jump to the front if they were dead on with their picks, and help decide a winner at the end should two people be tied and making the same picks. But, it will be hard to pick point spreads with too much accuracy due to the craziness and uncertainty that results when two teams that usually never play each other meet.

This means that with how the AQ/AL scoring goes and with weighting of playoff scores really anything could happen. The first year doing this I watched a guy fall from 1st place all season by double digits all season long to 8th by the end of the playoffs...

To me it looks like I did not pick either Iowa of the North of Jacksonville to the west of the real one to even make the playoffs so no way I can pick them to win it all.... your computer should have screened that one.



My computer only does what it's told....you told it to put Jax State as the NC and UNI as the runner up.....


Unlike the poll, this has no committee to oversee the picks and make sure they make sense. I'm a firm believe in personal accountability - which is why it's rare you don't see me own up to things that I control.

I have never thought it's your fault .... only asked how it could happen....I mean I thought Jacksonville was in Fl until I picked the one from Alabama to win according to the doc. I honestly could not remember the format for picking, was it darken in the circle, write in on google doc? if that's what it was, I am fine with it as my computer and I suck at google doc - having trouble with the playoff picks as we speak so don't be surprised when my picks come through with Howard meeting Bucknell in Frisco,
