A sad story, indeed. Never should have happened. I am now more than ever convinced that the movie "Drumline" is 300% accurate at certain schools.

This story confuses me....he's a 26-year old Drum Major...who was preparing to enter college?

I thought Drum Majors were at the top of the band foodchain? And he was in the band, but not yet enrolled in College? How does that work?

You can major in drums?

There's a major percussion joke in there somewhere, but it would be in incredibly poor taste to make it....

Obit (http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/atlanta/obituary.aspx?n=robert-d-champion&pid=154812092&fhid=5036) doesn't mention it. Might just have been going back to school after working.

He was already in college. Drum Majors usually are at the top of the food chain, but the other drum majors pressured him to go through the hazing ritual, so that he would receive props and support from other bandsmen. Up to that point, people were undermining his authority.

About time the president and trustees formalized the suspension with a length.

Any details on what exactly the hazing entailed? Did they just beat the **** out of him?

Pretty ridiculous. One of the main reasons I never joined a fraternity. I knew if some bowl-cut frat tool was yelling at me and trying to make me do horrible things, I'd inevitably beat the **** out of him. There's a lot of psychology that explains the purpose of hazing. Simply put, when you go through a lot of tribulation in order to be a member of a certain group, your brain subconsciously resists any inclination to reject the group afterwards. You don't even know it, but you're doing mental backflips to avoid the possibility that all the stuff you went through was for nothing. It is an assault on the subconscious that adds to the cohesion of the group. Similar to the military (hell week/boot camp ect).

It was a "tradition" called Crossing Bus C. Basically making someone run the gauntlet from one end to the other while people, to borrow your phrase, just beat the **** out of him.

This article doesn't add much, other than it says 101 members of the 400 piece band weren't students at FAMU. How does that happen? Just think of the outcry if 25% of a school's football team was made up on non-students.

They have a partnership with a local college, I believe a community college, that does not have a marching band and FAMU allows them to participate so they can continue to play in college.

A tradition that needed to end a long time ago. Like five minutes after it started.

the professor speaks

to be clear- this is NOT hazing- this is assault

and it has nothing at all to do with what goes on in boot camps or in military schools

you should stick what you know

like predicting ASU 4-TD revenge wins

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Just an interesting aside that received little attention, Dr. Ammons, who resigned as President at FAMU when all of this went down, was named Provost and vice-president of student affairs at Delaware State last week. He will take over the position on July 4.

The News Urinal. xlolx Why would they identify him as a Democrat? xconfusedx

The fact that DSU would hire this guy, after the band murder, is typical of the way DSU thinks. They will remain small time as long as they are allowed to hire, and be lead by, incompetent idiots.

It would be good if DSU would break out of the silly mold they insist on remaining in and become a respected university. Too many hands in the till though for that to happen...and the kids suffer. xsmhx

As far as the band hazing goes, I am happy that the perps are getting jail time.

Whether your theory is true or not, a person does not need any type of hazing to feel attached to a group. Look at high school/college kids who demonize their, "rival" schools...many without ever having stepped onto their opponent's grounds. How about people who will vote for Hillary...no matter what? Kids defend their neighborhood, or the concept of it, without ever knowing the people outside of their little world.

Many folks seem to be hard wired to delineate themselves from others...by color, religion, school, location, politics, etc., without any sort of hazing as we know it.
