View Full Version : Old Dominion's Spring Game

With two-hand touch rules in effect, it's hard to fully assess the play of the Monarchs in their spring football game. Several plays were called dead that clearly would've continued in live-action. But that doesn't mean that nothing could be learned.

The most important lesson is that reserve QB Nate Ong looked to have supreme control of the second team offense. Last year Taylor Heinicke replaced Thomas DeMarco as starter, but we knew of DeMarco's capabilities if he would've been forced into action. We can't say the same of Ong, a JUCO transfer who saw limited play last year (I think only against Campbell). But after the first series or two, he looked like he had a full grasp of the offense and completed several passes in rhythm.

The strength of this team will be the receivers. Nick Mayers, Blair Roberts and Larry Pinkard all displayed play-making abilities. It's difficult to assess the running game since several plays were called dead at the line once a RB was touched. However, Tyree Lee and Colby Goodwyn both made spectacular one-handed catches out of the backfield.

Both sets of defensive lines had a couple sacks, but neither was particularly dominant. I don't know if that's a bad sign for them or a good sign for the offensive lines, but no singular unit stood out.
