Just curious, what is your top 5 for uniforms in the FCS?

None of them are really copying another...when helmets first came into being (and they were leather) that was the common stitching of the multiple leather pieces on many, many of them. Some schools, obviously Michigan, never strayed from it. I think Princeton has played many more years that UM, I think one of the first games ever, so if anything, the Wolverines are not as original as many think.

And while I like Ga Southern's crisp look, it is way too similar to Alabama, save the color change. Watch either team on a black and white TV, and if GSU aint on offense, can hardly tell them apart. Not top five.

Now, Lehigh's Brown and White, easily top five....worst.

in 1950, David M. Nelson came on board as head coach...

....Nelson also brought with him another icon of Delaware football: the "winged" helmet. The iconic "Michigan" style helmet was developed by Nelson's coach at Michigan, Fritz Crisler (who first used the helmet design when he was head coach at Princeton (albeit in black and orange)). Nelson played for Crisler when Crisler was head coach at Michigan, and Nelson brought the helmet design with him where ever he coached (Hillsdale College, Harvard, Maine and Delaware).

The ASU all-black home uniforms are my favorite (obviously) but there are several others I like a lot. The Georgia Southern classic look is timeless and I have always been fond of Montana's home uniforms as well. I also liked ODU's threads when I watched them play GSU.

I like the green on yellow, I think that looks really good. I hope they never plan to wear the yellow pants with the yellow jerseys, you add in the helmet and that's a bit too much yellow for me.

As to point one, Princeton's "Winged" helmet is the ORIGINAL! Michigan's use came along much later and gets 'credit' only because it is seen on TV all the time.

When you guys came onto the field to start warming up, our part of the student section about died of laughter. You look like team UPS. What can brown do for you(they werent particularly ugly...they just look like a UPS uniform)? You should post a shot of your home uni's I don't doubt they look considerably better.

lol the only thing that could be seen as a "knock-off" would be the helmet....as for the unis, Under Armour makes almost all of their uniforms the same....same as Nike...just look at them....same uniform...different color

Coach Sheridan is to thank for the Diamond F… and big kudos to Coach Fowler for bringing its meaning back.

It's a simple concept… Dallas Cowboys Star comes to mind. The Diamond Logo can also been seen on many high school helmets across South Carolina and Georgia.

Heck, our away are much better since they added the dark brown pants. At least gives some contrast. I think some some olde gold stripes down the sides would help, but that's more $.

I wouldn't say ours are the best. Some of my favorites are Maine, Montana, and the black App St ones. But ours are pretty solid and I was happy afew years back when we went back to these colors and got rid of the maroon, red, and purples

Personally... I like plain and simple. I don't care for the small stripes on the stitching on appys uniforms. Its my personal preference. The simpler the better. The blackouts aren't bad but they aren't top 5 to me.

The green isn't bad but the baby puke yellow are terrible. I like WVU but hate the yellow jerseys. In my opinion, yellow jerseys scream high school or low budget to me. That is not a.reflection of your team... I just dislike yellow or golf jerseys. I also hate silver or light grey jerseys instead of white.

As a GSU fan, of course I love our simple uni's. And any TRUE college football fan would realize that Alabama has stripes on their pants, and GSU does not. Duh.

As for best overall, its tough to say. I like NDSU's green unis, I'm a big fan of the piping down the front of the jersey. I like the old school look of Furman's shoulder stripes. I think App had some throwbacks they wore a couple of years ago that were pretty cool looking, but I'm not a big fan of their regular unis, just too much going on with the strips across the chest and shoulders.

Basically... "Those with taste appreciate the Alabama, Penn State, Georgia Southern style uniforms. There is no place/room in FCS (1AA) football for very gaudy uniforms" (using NASCAR, Roller Derby, Soccer and ugly Christmas sweaters as examples of gaudy).

I see it differently. Whatever it takes to get your team noticed is a huge plus. Kids today don't want to play in vanilla, they want to stomp azz in Mean Machine. By the way, I said it years ago, NIKE should have gone with the Mean Machine trademark instead of Combat.

Of course, being a huge fan of cycling, I am all about gaudy.

However, you can't say all kids want "Mean Machine"... there are many who would prefer a more traditional looking uniform. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I will say however, there is a reason that "bigger, better known" schools have traditional uniforms and the lesser known "look at me's" have gimmicky uni's. Think about it.... Notre Dame, USC, Penn State, Texas, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Georgia... traditional schools who don't need flashy. Then you have Boise State, Maryland, Oregon... they are (were) lesser known programs and used gimmicks to attract attention. It worked. I'd say the same thing at the FCS level... GSU, Montana, Youngstown are traditional and already established/known... EWU, NDSU are/were "lesser" known and have something to attract attention. No disrespect meant to EWU or NDSU... both are excellent programs. However, outside of the playoffs, what did anyone know EWU for last year? The red field. What did we know about them prior to last season? Nothing! Who knew anything about Central Arkansas before they put in a purple and grey field?

And I know I went into the field thing but it kinda plays along with the gaudy vs traditional argument.

I guess in a way you've proved my point and at the same time disproved it as well (kinda... having a 3rd jersey IS an attention attractor although Notre Dame has the 3rd uniform with green jerseys and the shamrock on the helmet. Keep in mind though that ND has kinda fallen in the eyes of the football respecting public and sorta needs a boost... But the ND ones are still classy and simple. Some 3rds are good looking and some just aren't. The basic NDSU uniforms are ok but personally, I don't care for the Denver Bronco style striping. Again, personal preference. I'm not a fan of the Montana throwbacks but I wouldn't call them worst because they are throwbacks and not just a one off 3rd option.

I like it better now that they got rid of the white outline. But I understand how you feel, the flying SD grew on me and now I love it.

How much collegiate wear do you purchase a year? Something I have been trying to point out on the Montana board is that Nike doesn't care if old farts (not implying you are one) like the new styles or not. They care about those that shell out money to have the new styles. For me, it will be in the next couple of years when my kids want a ton of cool Montana wear that Nike will soak me.
